Daisy and Lou are very excited about their trip. They join their mother in the weekly shopping as they need to buy things for their trip. The family makes a list of things to buy:

  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Field Trip Items - Biscuits, Water Bottles, and Dry Fruits.

Sapan Dada has a cart for selling vegetables and fruits. The prices of the vegetables and fruits are given below.

PRICE LIST
Cost for 1 kg

Custard apple: Rs. 45
Beans: Rs. 95
Radish: Rs. 23
Onion: Rs. 32
Potato: Rs. 37
Yam: Rs. 45
Sapota: Rs. 70
Papaya: Rs. 65
Banana: Rs. 55

Their mother buys things for Rs. 163. What might she have bought? There is more than one possibility.

2 kg of beans1 kg of custard apple and 1 kg of sapota1 kg of radish and 1 kg of yam
1 kg of onion and 1 kg of potato2 kg of radish and 2 kg of papaya2 kg of onion and 2 kg of potato

What do you notice about these two costs?

Teacher's Note

When you find the cost of multiple kilograms, multiply the price per kilogram by the number of kilograms. For example, 2 kg of beans costs 2 × 45 = 90 rupees. Check your addition when you combine the costs of different items to reach Rs. 163; most mistakes come from adding incorrectly rather than multiplying wrong.

Udaya Didi runs a store selling rice, atta, daal, and spices. Daisy and Lou help Udaya Didi return the balance to customers while their mother buys the groceries. Udaya Didi also asks them some tricky questions.

Help them find the missing numbers in each of the following. Use a number line, play money or any other way to find the balances.

CostPaidBalance
Rs. 113Rs. 150Rs. 37
Rs. 435Rs. 500
Rs. 200Rs. 75
Rs. 185Rs. 200
Rs. 149Rs. 500
Rs. 580Rs. 120

Lou and Daisy buy 3 kg bananas to eat on the way with their friends. Which of the following options can they use to buy the bananas?

[Figure: Five options (a, b, c, d, e) showing different combinations of Indian currency notes: option a shows two 5-rupee notes; option b shows one 100-rupee note, one 50-rupee note, and a coin; option c shows two 100-rupee notes; option d shows multiple 10-rupee notes; option e shows two 50-rupee notes and one 10-rupee note, See in your textbook]

Note for Teachers: Encourage students to share their approaches and discuss them with the grade. Guide them to use flexible approaches to solve above problems.

A Strange Puzzle!

Four naughty kids on a walk come across a fresh orange crop. They ask the farmer the price of one. The farmer says, "Each costs Rs. 21".

Two oranges each they buy. The farmer gives them with a sigh. They all reach in to their jackets, To take out notes from their pockets.

Each one pays a different note, Krishna a Rs. 50 and Sudama a Rs. 100 Mala a Rs. 200 and Neela a Rs. 500.

What is the balance that they each got?

Krishna
Paid: Rs. ________
Balance: Rs. ________

Sudama
Paid: Rs. ________
Balance: Rs. ________

Mala
Paid: Rs. ________
Balance: Rs. ________

Neela
Paid: Rs. ________
Balance: Rs. ________

Teacher's Note

The cost is the same for everyone: 2 oranges at Rs. 21 each = Rs. 42. The difference is only in which note each person paid with. To find the balance, subtract the cost from what was paid. Write the subtraction as an equation for each person to keep your work organized.

Key Points

  • To find the total cost of multiple kilograms, multiply the price per kilogram by the number of kilograms needed.
  • Balance is the money left after buying. To find it, subtract the cost from the amount paid.
  • The same item costs the same amount no matter who buys it, but different people may pay with different notes and receive different balances.
  • You can use a number line, play money, or mental math to solve problems about cost and balance.
  • There is often more than one way to combine items to reach a certain total cost.
