Light Travels in a Straight Line
If you look at a candle flame through a straight pipe you can see it, but through a bent pipe you cannot, because light travels in straight lines and the bend blocks its path.
| Type of object | Behaviour of light | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Transparent | Allows light to pass through completely | Glass, clear water |
| Translucent | Allows light to pass partially | Butter paper, frosted glass |
| Opaque | Allows no light to pass through | Table, book, wood |
Reflection
When light falls on a surface it bounces back; this is reflection. Polished surfaces such as mirrors reflect most of the light. The ray that strikes the surface is the incident ray, the ray that bounces back is the reflected ray, and the line perpendicular to the surface at the point of incidence is the normal. The angle between the incident ray and the normal is the angle of incidence (i); the angle between the reflected ray and the normal is the angle of reflection (r).
Laws of reflection: (1) The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection (∠i = ∠r). (2) The incident ray, the reflected ray and the normal all lie in the same plane.
Images in a Plane Mirror
An image is formed where reflected rays meet, or appear to meet. A real image is formed when the rays actually meet and it can be shown on a screen. A virtual image is formed when the rays only appear to meet and it cannot be shown on a screen. A plane mirror forms an image that is virtual, erect (upright) and the same size as the object. The image is as far behind the mirror as the object is in front of it.
Lateral inversion: in a plane mirror the left of the object appears as the right of the image. That is why AMBULANCE is written reversed on the front of ambulances, so drivers ahead can read it correctly in their rear-view mirrors. To see a full image of yourself you need a mirror at least half your height.
Spherical Mirrors
| Mirror | Reflecting surface | Image | Uses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Concave | Inner (hollow) surface of the sphere | Can form a real, inverted image; when the object is very close, the image is virtual, erect and magnified | Used by doctors and dentists to see enlarged images of the ear, eye or teeth; shaving mirrors, torches and headlights |
| Convex | Outer (bulging) surface | Always virtual, erect and smaller than the object | Rear-view mirrors of vehicles, because they show a wider area |
Refraction and Lenses
The bending of light when it passes from one transparent medium into another is called refraction. Because of it, a pencil in a glass of water looks bent, and objects under water appear to be at a different place from where they really are.
| Lens | Shape | Behaviour | Image and use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Convex | Thicker in the middle | Converges (brings together) light rays | Can form real, inverted images; when the object is very close the image is virtual, erect and magnified. Used as a magnifying glass, in cameras and in spectacles for long sight |
| Concave | Thinner in the middle | Diverges (spreads out) light rays | Always forms a virtual, erect and smaller image. Used in spectacles for short sight |
Dispersion of White Light
Sunlight looks white but is made up of seven colours. When a beam of white light passes through a glass prism, it splits into violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red (VIBGYOR). This splitting is called dispersion. A rainbow after rain is formed when sunlight is dispersed by raindrops. A compact disc also shows these colours when light falls on it.
Questions and Answers
1. Name the three types of objects based on how light passes through them.
Show answer
Answer: Transparent, translucent and opaque.
Teacher's Note: Use the key term in your answer.
2. State the laws of reflection.
Show answer
Answer: The angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection, and the incident ray, reflected ray and normal lie in the same plane.
Teacher's Note: Give an example if the question allows.
3. What is lateral inversion?
Show answer
Answer: The apparent swapping of left and right in the image formed by a plane mirror.
Teacher's Note: Write a short, clear answer.
4. What is the difference between a real and a virtual image?
Show answer
Answer: A real image is formed by actual meeting of rays and can be taken on a screen; a virtual image is formed by rays that only appear to meet and cannot be taken on a screen.
Teacher's Note: Remember this for your exam.
5. Why do vehicles use convex mirrors as rear-view mirrors?
Show answer
Answer: A convex mirror gives an erect, smaller image and shows a much wider area behind the vehicle.
Teacher's Note: Learn this point and write it in your own words.
6. Which lens is used as a magnifying glass?
Show answer
Answer: A convex lens.
Teacher's Note: Use the key term in your answer.
7. What is dispersion? Name the colours of the spectrum.
Show answer
Answer: Splitting of white light into its colours; violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red.
Teacher's Note: Give an example if the question allows.
8. A ray strikes a plane mirror at an angle of incidence of 40°. What is the angle of reflection?
Show answer
Answer: 40°, because the angle of reflection is equal to the angle of incidence.
Teacher's Note: Write a short, clear answer.
