Question 1. 'शहरवासी सिर्फ माटी वाली को नहीं, उसके कंटर को भी अच्छी तरह पहचानते हैं।' आपकी समझ से वे कौन से कारण रहे होंगे जिनके रहते 'माटी वाली' को सब पहचानते थे?
उत्तर
शहरवासी माटी वाली तथा उसके कंटर को इसलिए जानते होंगे क्योंकि लाल मिट्टी की जरुरत चूल्हे-चौके की लिपाई के लिए हर घर की थी| पूरे टिहरी शहर में घर-घर में लाल मिट्टी देने का काम करने वाली वह अकेली थी।उसका कोई प्रतिद्वंदी नहीं था। इसलिए सभी उसके ग्राहक थे। चूँकि उसका कनस्तर बिना ढक्क्न का था जो ऊपर से खुला रहता था इसलिए लोग उसके कनस्तर को भी पहचानते थे|
Question 3. 'भूख मीठी कि भोजन मीठा' से क्या अभिप्राय है?
उत्तर
इस बात का आशय है जब मनुष्य भूखा होता है तो उसका विशेष ध्यान भूख मिटाने पर होता है ना कि वह स्वादिष्ट भोजन की खोज करता है। यानी भूख लगे होने पर भोजन की मिठास नहीं देखी जाती| भूख खुद ही भोजन में मिठास पैदा कर देती है|
Question 4. 'पुरखों की गाढ़ी कमाई से हासिल की गयी चीज़ों को हराम के भाव बेचने को मेरा दिल गवाही नहीं देता।' - मालकिन के इस कथन के आलोक में विरासत के बारे में अपने विचार व्यक्त कीजिए।
उत्तर
पूर्वजों द्वारा दी गयी चीज़ें विरासत होती हैं| मालकिन को पीतल के बर्तन विरासत में मिले थे और वह उन्हें बहुत संभालकर रखती थी| चूँकि उसके मन में विरासत के प्रति आदर, सम्मान और प्रेम की भावना थी| चूँकि उसे पता था कि पूर्वजों ने उन चीज़ों को कड़ी मेहनत और अभाव में ख़रीदा है| विरासत की चीज़ें उसके लिए अनमोल थी|
Question 5. माटी वाली का रोटियों का इस तरह हिसाब लगाना उसकी किस मजबूरी को प्रकट करता है?
उत्तर
माटी वाली का रोटियों का हिसाब लगाना उसकी गरीबी को प्रकट करता है। उसे अपने और बुड्ढे पति का पेट भरना होता था इसलिए वह किसी घर में मिली रोटियों को गिनती और अपने पति के लिए भी बचाकर लाती ताकि उसका पेट भी भर सके|
Question 6. 'आज माटी वाली बुड्ढे को कोरी रोटियाँ नहीं देगी।' - इस कथन के आधार पर माटी वाली के ह्रदय के भावों को अपने शब्दों में लिखिए।
उत्तर
बुड्ढे पति के अलावा माटी वाली का कोई अपना नहीं था| वह अभावग्रस्त जीवन जी रही थी जिस कारण वह अपने बीमार पति के लिए अच्छे भोजन नहीं जुटा पाती थी| परन्तु उस दिन वह अपने पति के लिए तीन रोटियाँ बचाकर ले जा रही थी| उसने अपनी आमदनी से प्याज भी ख़रीदा था| उसने सोचा था कि वह घर जाकर सब्जी बनाएगी और अपने पति के सामने परोसेगी| आज उसके पति को रुखा-सूखा नहीं खाना पड़ेगा| अपने पति के प्रति ये सोच माटीवाली के असीम स्नेह और कर्तव्यों को दर्शाते हैं|
Question 7. गरीब आदमी का श्मशान नहीं उजड़ना चाहिए। इस कथन का आशय स्पष्ट कीजिए।
उत्तर
गरीब आदमी का श्मशान नहीं उजड़ना चाहिए - इस कथन का आशय यह है कि गरीबों का घर नहीं छिनना चाहिए। एक दिन जब माटीवाली मजदूरी कर घर पहुँचती है तो उसके पति की मृत्यु हो चुकी होती है। अब उसके पास कोई अपना नहीं था| उसे अपने पति के अंतिम संस्कार की चिंता थी चूँकि बाँध के कारण सारे श्मशान पानी में डूब चूके थे। उसे लिए अब घर भी श्मशान के समान लग रहा था|
