Chapter 6: Meri Maan
I had a great desire to go to the Lucknow Congress. Grandmother and Father opposed it, but Mother gave me the money for the expenses. At that time, the Service Committee had begun in Shahjahanpur. I cooperated with the Service Committee with great enthusiasm. Father and Grandmother did not approve of my activities in this manner, but Mother did not let my enthusiasm fade, due to which she often had to endure scolding and beating from Father. In truth, my Mother is a goddess. Whatever life and courage I have acquired, it is the result of the grace of my Mother and Guru Sri Somdev Ji. Grandmother and Father urged me greatly to marry, but Mother always said that it would be proper to marry only after acquiring education. Mother's encouragement and proper conduct created such steadfastness in my life that even when calamities and difficulties came, I did not abandon my resolve.
Teacher's Note
Notice how Bismill describes his mother's influence on him. In this passage, he shows that character is shaped not just by words but by the steady example a parent sets. When you read someone's life story, look for the turning points - moments where a person's values were tested and held firm. That is often where you will find the deepest influence.
Once, my Father filed a civil case against someone and told the lawyer to do whatever work was necessary. When some necessity arose, the lawyer asked me and said that I should put Father's signature on the power of attorney. I immediately replied that this would be against dharma, and I could never commit such a sin. The lawyer tried hard to convince me that the case would be dismissed. But nothing could influence me, nor did I sign. Throughout my life I have always practiced truth; whatever happens, I speak the truth.
Mother came to Shahjahanpur at the age of eleven to be married. At that time, she was entirely uneducated, like a village girl. A few days after arriving in Shahjahanpur, Grandmother called her younger sister. She taught Mother the housekeeping work of a joint household. Mother was not fortunate to have the support of Father, and due to this, she endured Father's scolding and beating. However, in fact, my Mother is a goddess. Whatever little life and courage came to me was the result of my Mother's and Guru Sri Somdev Ji's grace. Grandmother and Father urged greatly for my marriage, but Mother would say that marriage should be done only after receiving education. Mother's encouragement and good conduct produced such firmness in my life that even when any calamity and trouble came, I did not abandon my resolve.

She had developed the desire to read on her own. The educated women friends from the neighborhood who would come to the house - Mother would learn the alphabet from them. In this way, after completing all the household work, whatever time she could get, she would read and write. Through the fruits of hard work, within a few days she began to study Devanagari books. Mother taught my younger sisters in childhood. Since I entered the Arya Samaj, I have had much conversation with Mother. Her views have become somewhat more liberal than they were at that time. If I had not found such a mother, I too would have lived an ordinary life, trapped in the cycle of the world. Besides education, in revolutionary life too she has helped me in the same way as Mazzini's mother helped him. Mother's greatest ideal for me was that no one should lose their life. She would say that you should never give the death penalty even to your enemy. To follow this ideal of hers, I have been forced on one or two occasions to break my vow.
Teacher's Note
The author describes how his mother taught herself to read and write after marriage, stealing time between household duties. This shows that education is not just about formal schooling - it is about the determination to learn. The detail that she taught her daughters also reveals how she passed on knowledge within the family. Look for these practical examples of education in the texts you read.
Mother of my birth! In this life I did not even get the opportunity to try to repay your debt. What can I say - if I lived countless births and spent my entire life trying, I still could not repay you. The love and steadfastness with which you have reformed this insignificant life is indescribable. I remember every incident of my life that you guided me with your divine words and saved me.
