વચનના બે પ્રકાર છેઃ એકવચન અને બહુવચન.

એકવચન : જ્યારે કોઈ એક જ વસ્તુ, વ્યક્તિ, ઘટનાનો નિર્દેશ કરવો હોય ત્યારે એકવચન પ્રયોજાય છે. જેમ કે,

• આપને આંજણી થઈ છે તો જવ લગાવો.
• આતમનો તારો દીવો પ્રગટાવા, તું વિણ સર્વ પરાયા.

બહુવચન: જ્યારે “એકથી વધુનો નિર્દેશ કરવો હોય ત્યારે બહુવચન પ્રયોજાય છે. જેમ કે,

• કેટલાક લોકોને વણમાગી સલાહ આપવાનું ગમે છે.
• સ્વજનોએ મોહનને મગન પાસેથી જમીન પાછી લઈ લેવા સલાહ આપી.

બહુવચન કરવા માટેના નિયમો:

(1) સામાન્ય રીતે એકવચનની સંજ્ઞાઓને અંતે “અ”, “આ’, ‘ઈ’, ‘ઈ’, ‘ઉ‘ કે ‘ઊ’ સ્વર હોય તેમનું બહુવચન “ઓ’ પ્રત્યય લગાડીને થાય છે.

(2) જે એકવચનની સંજ્ઞાને અંતે “ઓ´ સ્વર આવતો હોય તેનું બહુવચન “ઓ’ને બદલે “આ’ કરીને કે “આ’ની સાથે “ઓ′ લગાડીને કરવામાં આવે છે.

(૩) જે એકવચનની સંજ્ઞાને અંતે ‘ઉં′ સ્વર હોય તેનું બહુવચન ‘ઉ’ને બદલે ‘આ' કરીને કે “આંની સાથે “ઓ′ લગાડીને કરવામાં આવે છે.

(4) કેટલીક સંજ્ઞાઓનાં એકવચન અને બહુવચનનાં સમાન રૂપ ચલાવવામાં આવે છે
