નદીવિયોગ નિબંધનું શીર્ષક જ લેખકનો નદી સાથેનો આત્મીયભાવ દર્શાવે છે. નદી નામ સાંભળતાં જ લેખક રોમાંચિત થઈ જાય છે. લેખક પોતાના ગામની ખળખળ ઘોષ કરતી (વહેતી) ઘોષા નદીને યાદ કરે છે.
આજે એ નદીનું અસ્તિત્વ નથી. સૌના માટે તે એક દંતકથા સમી છે, છતાં એ દંતકથાને તેઓ જેમ કોઈ માતા નાના બાળકને પંપાળે તેમ પંપાળે છે.
લેખકને ઘોષા નદી વગરનું જીવન સાલે છે. તેઓ જાણે નદી વગરના, સખી વગરના થઈ ગયા હોય તેવી અનુભૂતિ થાય છે. નદી વગર ક્યાં સ્નાન કરું? સૂર્યનમસ્કાર ક્યાં કરું? અર્થ ક્યાં આપે? એવા પ્રશ્નો તેમને મૂંઝવે છે. તેઓ નદી વગર જાણે નિરાધાર થઈ ગયા છે.

પ્રવાસ એનું કર્મ છે. સહુને આપવું એનો ધર્મ છે. અટકવું એના ભાગ્યમાં નથી. એ ફંટાઈ જાય છે, પણ અટકી જતી નથી. હા, ક્યારેક પૃથ્વીના પેટાળમાં સમાઈ જાય છે, અદશ્ય થઈ જાય છે.
નદીનો મહિમા ગાતાં ગાતાં ફરી પાછું તેમનું મન ઘોષા નદી તરફ વળે છે. તેમને થાય છે કે ક્યાંક અલુપ્ત થયેલી ઘોષા નદી સરસ્વતી તો નહીં હોય ને? એવો પ્રશ્ન તેમના મનમાં જાગે છે.
આ ધોષા નદીનું આકર્ષણ કેવું અનોખું છે! અંતે તેઓ નદીમય થઈ જાય છે. તેમને થાય છે કે, “ક્યાંક નદી મારામાં સમાઈ ગઈ છે, હું જ નદીનો એક અંશ છું. મારી ગતિ એ નદીના અદશ્ય સ્પર્શનો જ ચમત્કાર છે. નદી મારામાં છે. હું નદીમાં છું.
હું અને નદી અન્યોન્યમાં સમાવિષ્ટ થઈ ગયાં છીએ અને હું નદી બની ગયો છું."
