Simple Interest

Interest is the extra money paid for using someone else's money. The money borrowed or deposited is the principal (P), the interest per Rs. 100 per year is the rate (R) and the duration is the time (T). The sum of principal and interest is the amount (A).

QuantityFormula
Simple interest\( SI = \frac{P \times R \times T}{100} \)
Amount\( A = P + SI \)
Principal\( P = \frac{SI \times 100}{R \times T} \)
Rate\( R = \frac{SI \times 100}{P \times T} \)
Time\( T = \frac{SI \times 100}{P \times R} \)

Points to Remember

1. If the rate is per annum, time must be in years. 3 months = 1/4 year, 6 months = 1/2 year, 9 months = 3/4 year and 20 months = 5/3 years.
2. When time is given as dates, count the number of days and divide by 365.
3. If a sum becomes n times itself, the interest is (n - 1) times the principal. A sum that triples at 13 1/3% takes 200/(40/3) = 15 years.
4. Interest is the same each year in simple interest because it is always charged on the original principal.
5. Example: Rs. 600 at 2% for 20 months gives 600 × 2 × (5/3)/100 = Rs. 20.
