Compound Interest

Amount A = P(1 + r/100)^n and compound interest CI = A - P, where interest is added to the principal after every period. For half-yearly compounding use rate r/2 and 2n periods; for quarterly compounding use r/4 and 4n periods.

For a fraction of a year such as 2 1/3 years, find the amount for the whole years with compound interest and then apply simple interest for the remaining fraction on that amount.

Differences and Special Cases

For 2 years the difference between CI and SI is P(r/100)^2. If the rates differ each year, multiply the growth factors: 4000 x 1.05 x 1.15 = Rs. 4830.

Growth and Depreciation

Population growth, production growth and depreciation use the same formula: value after n years = present value x (1 + r/100)^n for growth or (1 - r/100)^n for depreciation. To go back in time divide instead of multiply: 9261000/1.05^3 = 8000000.

Worked example: Rs. 1000 at 10% for 18 months compounded half-yearly: rate 5% for 3 periods, A = 1000 x 1.05^3 = 1157.625, CI = Rs. 157.63.
