Multiplying Algebraic Expressions
Multiply the numerical coefficients and add the powers of like variables: (-2x^2)(7a^2x^7) = -14a^2x^9. To multiply a polynomial by a monomial, multiply every term of the polynomial by the monomial. To multiply two polynomials, multiply each term of one by each term of the other and collect like terms.
Identities
(a + b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2
(a - b)^2 = a^2 - 2ab + b^2
(a + b)(a - b) = a^2 - b^2
(x + a)(x + b) = x^2 + (a + b)x + ab
Useful: (a + b)^2 - (a - b)^2 = 4ab and (a + b)^2 + (a - b)^2 = 2(a^2 + b^2).
Worked example: 998^2 = (1000 - 2)^2 = 1000000 - 4000 + 4 = 996004. And 68 x 72 = (70 - 2)(70 + 2) = 4900 - 4 = 4896.
Value of an Expression from a Given Value
If x + 1/x = k then x^2 + 1/x^2 = k^2 - 2 and x^3 + 1/x^3 = k^3 - 3k.
If x - 1/x = d then x^2 + 1/x^2 = d^2 + 2 and x^3 - 1/x^3 = d^3 + 3d.
If x + y = s and xy = p then x^2 + y^2 = s^2 - 2p.
Worked example: if x + 1/x = 4 then x^2 + 1/x^2 = 14 and x^4 + 1/x^4 = 14^2 - 2 = 194.
Greatest Common Factor of Monomials
Take the GCF of the coefficients and the lowest power of each letter that is present in all the monomials. For 6a^2b^2c, 8ab^3c^3 and 12a^3b^2c^2 the GCF is 2ab^2c.
