Questions
Passage 1: Birds and Their Nests
Swallows and martins build their nests out of mud and clay, so they have to construct them in a sheltered place away from the rain. The tailor bird sews leaves together to make its nest. Other birds weave their nests from grass.
Hollows in the ground and small burrows are also used as nests. Flightless birds, such as the ostrich, dig holes in the ground to hatch and protect their young, and the kingfisher cuts a tunnel into the river bank.
Parrots, doves and some owls do not bother to build a nest at all. They try to find one ready-made to take over. And the cuckoo simply lays its egg in another bird's nest and leaves it there for the other bird to rear.

Passage 2: The Poem About a Shadow
I have a little shadow
That goes in and out with me,
And what can be the use of him
Is more than I can see.
He is very, very like me
From the heels up to the head;
And I see him jump before me,
When I jump into my bed.
The funniest thing about him
Is the way he likes to grow,
Not at all like proper children,
Which is always very slow.
For he sometimes shoots up taller
Like an India-rubber ball,
And he sometimes gets so little
That there's none of him at all.
One morning, very early,
Before the sun was up,
I rose and found the shining dew
On every buttercup.
But my lazy little shadow,
Like an arrant sleepy-head,
Had stayed at home behind me
And was fast asleep in bed.
Q10. What does the shadow do when the boy jumps into his bed? [1 mark]

2. The poem compares it to a stretching rubber ball.
Q13. Sometimes the shadow becomes so little that there is nothing of it. When does this happen? [1 mark]

Teacher's Note:
1. The sun is directly above at noon.
2. A shadow also disappears if there is no light.
Q14. When the boy went out one morning, the shadow was not with him. Why? [1 mark]

Teacher's Note:
1. A shadow needs a source of light.
2. The poet describes this in a playful way.
Q15. Why does the boy think his shadow is lazy? [1 mark]
View Answer & Explanation
