Types of Computers
Computers differ in speed, storage capacity, size and use.
| Type | Features | Uses | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supercomputer | Fastest computers; very large storage; many processors working in parallel; speed measured in FLOPS (floating point operations per second); very costly | Weather forecasting, space research, aerodynamics, complex calculations | PARAM (first Indian supercomputer), ANURAG; CDC 6600 designed by Seymour Cray was the first |
| Mainframe | Very large; supports hundreds or thousands of users; high storage; expensive; sensitive to heat and dust | Banks, government departments, scientific research, nation-wide networks | IBM 4381, CDC Cyber |
| Minicomputer | Supports several users at a time; smaller than a mainframe but larger than a microcomputer | Data processing, research, computer-aided design, engineering firms | HCL Magnum, VAX 7500 |
| Microcomputer | For a single user; has a microprocessor as its CPU; common, cheap and easy to use | Homes, schools, offices, cyber cafes, banks, photo editing, games | Desktops, laptops, tablets |
| Mobile | Hand-held, portable, wireless; smartphones also give internet, e-mail and web browsing | Calls, SMS, MMS, internet | Smartphones |
| Console game | Device for playing games on a TV or monitor using a joystick or handheld controller | Gaming | Xbox, PlayStation |
| Embedded computer | A computer built into a device to do one specific job | ATM, washing machine, microwave oven |
Data Processing by a Computer
A computer takes input (raw data fed through input devices), processes it by calculation, comparison and decision making using programs, and gives output (the information) through output devices. Processing is done in the CPU, the brain of the computer.
| Part of CPU | Function |
|---|---|
| Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) | Does arithmetic (add, subtract, multiply, divide) and logical comparisons (equal to, greater than, and so on) |
| Memory Unit (MU) | Main storage; holds data, instructions and results before they are used by the ALU or CU |
| Control Unit (CU) | Directs and co-ordinates the working of all hardware and the flow of data and instructions |
Questions and Answers
1. Which computer can execute more than 100 million instructions in a second, and what is it used for?
Show answer
Answer: A supercomputer. It is used for weather forecasting, space research and other complex calculations.
Teacher's Note: Use the key term in your answer.
2. IBM 4381 is an example of which computer?
Show answer
Answer: A mainframe computer.
Teacher's Note: Give an example if the question allows.
3. What was the first Indian supercomputer?
Show answer
Answer: PARAM.
Teacher's Note: Write a short, clear answer.
4. Expand: FLOPS, IBM, CDC.
Show answer
Answer: FLOPS: Floating Point Operations Per Second. IBM: International Business Machines. CDC: Control Data Corporation.
Teacher's Note: Remember this for your exam.
5. Write short notes on embedded computers and console games.
Show answer
Answer: An embedded computer is built into a device to do a fixed job, such as an ATM or a washing machine. A console game is a device for playing games on a TV or monitor using a joystick or controller, such as an Xbox or PlayStation.
Teacher's Note: Learn this point and write it in your own words.
6. Explain the working of the CPU.
Show answer
Answer: The CPU receives the input data, the ALU does the calculations and comparisons, the memory unit stores data and results, and the control unit directs everything, and the result goes to the output device.
Teacher's Note: Use the key term in your answer.
7. Write short notes on a mobile.
Show answer
Answer: A mobile is a hand-held, portable, wireless device used for calls, SMS and MMS. Smartphones also give internet services such as browsing and e-mail.
Teacher's Note: Give an example if the question allows.
