What is addition?
Addition finds the total when two or more numbers are put together. The numbers that are added are called addends and the answer is called the sum. For example, in 3,125 + 4,263 = 7,388, the numbers 3,125 and 4,263 are the addends and 7,388 is the sum.
Adding in columns
Write the addends under each other so that ones are under ones, tens under tens, hundreds under hundreds and thousands under thousands. Add column by column, starting from the ones on the right.
Addition without carrying
Add 3,125 and 4,263.
1. Ones: 5 + 3 = 8.
2. Tens: 2 + 6 = 8.
3. Hundreds: 1 + 2 = 3.
4. Thousands: 3 + 4 = 7.
So the sum is 7,388.
Addition with carrying
If a column adds up to 10 or more, we keep the ones digit in that column and carry the tens digit to the next column on the left. Add 4,758 and 2,379.
1. Ones: 8 + 9 = 17. Write 7 and carry 1 to the tens.
2. Tens: 1 + 5 + 7 = 13. Write 3 and carry 1 to the hundreds.
3. Hundreds: 1 + 7 + 3 = 11. Write 1 and carry 1 to the thousands.
4. Thousands: 1 + 4 + 2 = 7.
The sum is 7,137.
Adding three numbers
The same method works for more than two addends. Add 3,456, 2,789 and 1,204: ones 6 + 9 + 4 = 19 (write 9, carry 1); tens 1 + 5 + 8 + 0 = 14 (write 4, carry 1); hundreds 1 + 4 + 7 + 2 = 14 (write 4, carry 1); thousands 1 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 7. The sum is 7,449.
Properties of addition
1. Order property: changing the order of the addends does not change the sum. 2,112 + 3,259 = 3,259 + 2,112 = 5,371.
2. Grouping property: when three or more numbers are added, the way we group them does not change the sum. (1,234 + 2,345) + 3,456 = 1,234 + (2,345 + 3,456) = 7,035.
3. Zero property: adding zero to a number gives the same number. 6,534 + 0 = 6,534.
Key points
1. The sum is always greater than or equal to each addend (equal only when the other addend is 0).
2. Always start adding from the ones column.
3. Check the answer by adding the numbers in the reverse order.
Worked examples
Example 1. What is 100 more than 9,990? Answer: 9,990 + 100 = 10,090.
Example 2. Find 80 hundreds + 600 tens. Answer: 80 hundreds = 8,000 and 600 tens = 6,000, so the total is 14,000.
Example 3. Fill in the blank: 2,345 + (1,243 + 4,321) = (2,345 + ____) + 4,321. Answer: 1,243, by the grouping property.
Quick Check Questions
Q1. Add 5,234 and 2,345. [1 mark]
View Answer & Explanation
Answer: 5,234 + 2,345 = 7,579
Teacher's Note:
1. No column needs carrying here.
2. Add ones, tens, hundreds and thousands in turn.
Q2. Add 4,675 and 3,987. [1 mark]
View Answer & Explanation
Answer: 4,675 + 3,987 = 8,662
Teacher's Note:
1. Carry 1 from the ones, tens and hundreds columns.
2. The thousands column then gives 1 + 4 + 3 = 8.
Q3. What do we call the numbers being added and the result? [1 mark]
View Answer & Explanation
Answer: The numbers being added are addends and the result is the sum.
Teacher's Note:
1. These are the standard words for addition.
2. Use them when you read an addition fact aloud.
Q4. Fill in the blank: ____ + 2,170 = 2,170. [1 mark]
View Answer & Explanation
Answer: 0
Teacher's Note:
1. This is the zero property of addition.
2. Adding 0 never changes a number.
Q5. Fill in the blank: 4,359 + 2,738 = 2,738 + ____. [1 mark]
View Answer & Explanation
Answer: 4,359
Teacher's Note:
1. This is the order property of addition.
2. The sum stays the same when the addends swap places.
