Addition

Addition finds the total when two or more numbers are put together. Each number added is an addend and the result is the sum.

Addition without carrying and with carrying

Rule: write the addends under each other in the place value chart (T Th, Th, H, T, O) and add column by column from right to left.

1. Add 13,251 and 32,132.

Show answer

Answer: 13,251 + 32,132 = 45,383

Teacher's Note: No column needs carrying. Add ones, tens, hundreds, thousands and ten thousands from the right.

2. Add 75,364 and 23,678.

Show answer

Answer: 75,364 + 23,678 = 99,042. Ones: 4 + 8 = 12, write 2 and carry 1. Tens: 1 + 6 + 7 = 14, write 4 and carry 1. Hundreds: 1 + 3 + 6 = 10, write 0 and carry 1. Thousands: 1 + 5 + 3 = 9. Ten thousands: 7 + 2 = 9.

Teacher's Note: Carry 1 to the next column whenever a column adds to 10 or more.

Properties of addition

PropertyMeaningExample
OrderChanging the order of two numbers does not change the sum.25,552 + 36,779 = 36,779 + 25,552 = 62,331
GroupingChanging the grouping of three or more numbers does not change the sum.2,349 + (1,243 + 5,432) = (2,349 + 1,243) + 5,432 = 9,024
ZeroA number plus zero is the number itself.6,534 + 0 = 6,534
