Why Animals Need Food
Animals cannot make their own food as plants do. They eat plants or other animals. Food gives them energy to move and do work, and helps them to grow and stay healthy.
Groups of Animals by Food
| Group | What they eat | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Herbivores | Only plants or plant products | Cow, buffalo, elephant, rabbit |
| Carnivores | Flesh of other animals | Lion, tiger, frog |
| Omnivores | Both plants and flesh | Crow, bear, humans |
| Scavengers | Flesh of dead animals; they clean the environment | Vulture, hyena |
| Decomposers | Remains of dead plants and animals, which they decompose | Fungi, bacteria |
Herbivores have flat, broad teeth for grinding. Carnivores have long, pointed, sharp teeth for tearing flesh.
Food Chain
A food chain shows who eats whom to get food. It starts with green plants (producers), which make food by photosynthesis. Herbivores that eat plants are primary consumers. Animals that eat herbivores are secondary consumers, and those that eat them are tertiary consumers. At the end, decomposers such as bacteria feed on the dead. The arrows show the direction in which energy flows. Many food chains joined together form a food web.
Example: Grass → Grasshopper → Bird → Snake → Bacteria.
