Up in the Sky

In the morning we see the Sun; at night we see the Moon and the stars. The Sun, the Moon, the stars and the eight planets are heavenly bodies. The Sun and the eight planets that go round it make the solar system. The planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

The Sun

The Sun is at the centre of the solar system. It is a huge ball of very hot gases and the nearest star to the Earth. It gives us heat and light, and plants make food using sunlight. The energy we get from the Sun is solar energy, used in solar cookers and solar lights.

The Moon

The Moon is the closest neighbour of the Earth and its natural satellite. It is smaller than the Sun but looks the same size because it is much closer. Its surface has many big holes called craters. It has no light of its own and gets light from the Sun. In 1969 Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin were the first people to land on it. It has no air or water, so no one can live there.

The Stars

Stars are huge balls of gas that twinkle at night. They have their own heat and light. Sirius is the brightest star in the sky. Some stars appear to form patterns like animals, people or things, called constellations, for example the Great Bear (Ursa Major), Leo and Scorpius.
