The Earth, Our Home
The earth is home to all living beings. The layer of air around the earth is called the atmosphere. Three fourths of the earth's surface is covered by water and one fourth by land. Life is possible on the earth because it has air, water and the right temperature.
Shape of the Earth
Long ago people believed that the earth is flat. Ferdinand Magellan first proved that the earth is round like a ball. In fact, it is slightly flat at the top and the bottom. Pictures taken from space also show its shape.
Globe and Maps
A globe is a model of the earth that helps us study it. A map is a drawing of the earth or a part of it on a flat surface. A book of maps is called an atlas.
Continents and Oceans
A very large land mass on the earth is a continent. There are 7 continents and 5 oceans.
| Seven continents | Five oceans |
|---|---|
| Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America, Australia, Antarctica | Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, Antarctic (Southern) |
Asia is the largest continent and Australia the smallest. The Pacific is the largest ocean and the Arctic the smallest.
Directions, Horizon and Coast
North, south, east and west are the four directions. Sailors use a compass to find direction. The horizon is the place where the sky and the land (or sea) appear to meet from far away. The coast is the place where the land and the sea actually meet.
