Root System and Shoot System

The two main parts of a plant are the root and the shoot. The part growing below the ground is the root system. The part above the ground is the shoot system: stem, branches, leaves, flowers and fruits.

Roots

Tap rootFibrous root
One main root with small roots growing sideways from it; root hairs absorb waterA bushy bunch of thin roots growing from the base of the stem; main and side roots look alike
Bean, carrot, pea, mangoGrass, wheat, rice

Functions of roots: they fix the plant firmly in the soil; they take in water and minerals and pass them to the stem; they hold the soil and prevent soil erosion; some roots store food (carrot, radish, turnip, beetroot).

Fun facts: roots of the banyan tree hang from its branches, reach the ground and become thick like trunks. Many cacti have roots that spread wide but go only a short way into the soil.

Stem

The stem bears branches, leaves, buds, flowers and fruits. Stems are strong and woody in trees (teak, mango), soft and green in herbs (mint, banana), and woody but thin in shrubs (rose).

Functions: keeps the plant upright; carries water, food and minerals to all parts; stores food (sugarcane; underground stems of potato and ginger); stores water (thick fleshy stems of desert cacti).

Leaf

Part of a leafMeaning
Leaf blade (lamina)Flat broad part
Midrib (main vein)Line in the centre of the leaf
Side veinsLines on either side of the main vein
Petiole (leaf stalk)Joins the leaf to the branch

Leaves are the food factory of a plant. Chlorophyll, the green substance, absorbs sunlight, and the leaves make food from air (carbon dioxide), water and sunlight. This is photosynthesis. Tiny openings under the leaf, the stomata, let air in. Leaves release water vapour, which keeps the plant cool. Methi, spinach and mint store food in their leaves. New plants grow on the edges of Bryophyllum leaves.

Flower, Fruit and Seed

Flower: the most colourful part; it grows from a bud. Most flowers change into fruits, but the lotus flower does not. Flowers attract birds, insects and other animals that help the plant to reproduce. Cauliflower and broccoli are eaten flowers. Rafflesia is the largest flower in the world.

Fruit: formed from a flower; it has seeds inside and stores food. Some fruits, like peas, are cooked as vegetables. Strawberries have their seeds outside.

Seed: has a baby plant protected inside. Seeds germinate into new plants and are used as dry fruits (cashew), for oil (mustard), flavour (fenugreek), pulses (moong) and cereals (rice). Germination is the growth of a new plant from a seed with water, air and warmth.
