Questions
Passage 1 (Questions 1 to 8)
Ideas rule the world. You shape your fate by your thoughts, and to rise high you must think high. Life's battles do not always go to the stronger or the faster person; sooner or later the person who wins is the one who believes he can.
Success starts in the mind, and the mind is nothing more than a bundle of thoughts. Since you can shape your thoughts, you can also shape your destiny. Thoughts are the most powerful source of success.
For thoughts to blossom into success they must be joined with definiteness of purpose, perseverance and a strong burning desire to turn them into action. Believe firmly that you will succeed, and you will do whatever is needed to make it happen.
Faith in yourself and confidence that you will succeed are the key to success in any venture. If you keep your mind fixed on your goal, you will unconsciously seize the opportunities that help you reach it.
Keep the right mental attitude of courage, frankness and good cheer. If your desire is weak and your efforts erratic, your achievements will be slight and short-lived. But if you go after your goal with the single-mindedness of a bulldog after a cat, nothing can stop you. The goal should be clear and specific and tied to a fixed timeframe, so that your energy is focused on achieving it.

Passage 2 (Questions 9 to 16)
The press is a pillar of democracy. In a democracy every person is entitled to form and express an opinion, and the daily press is a convenient vehicle for doing so.
The press is also an educator. It creates and moulds public opinion, voices public demands and ventilates public grievances. It safeguards the rights of people, checks the misuse of power by those in high positions, and exposes corrupt and inefficient officials. By criticising lapses of officials it gives a healthy tone to the administration, so a government cannot ignore it.
Because of these functions the press should be given a large measure of freedom. If rigid restrictions are placed on news and views, it cannot work faithfully and fearlessly.
Freedom from government control does not mean complete freedom, however. Some newspapers are party papers or are owned by big business tycoons, and they must echo their master's voice. They indulge in one-sided propaganda and suppress or distort the truth.
In some countries freedom of the press is guaranteed by the Constitution. In India it is implied in the fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression. In countries ruled by dictators it hardly exists.
Freedom brings obligations. The press must publish correct news and avoid mischievous criticism of the government, so that liberty does not degenerate into licence. The public too should check the press by withholding patronage when it works against their interests.
Q9. What are the different advantages of the press? [2 marks]
View Answer & Explanation

Teacher's Note:
1. List three or four functions.
2. Stay within 30–40 words.
Q10. Why can the government not ignore the press? [2 marks]
View Answer & Explanation
Answer: The press criticises the actions and lapses of government officials and so gives a healthy tone to the administration. As it speaks for the public, the government cannot treat its views with disrespect.
Teacher's Note:
1. Think about the press as the voice of the people.
2. Mention criticism of the officials.
Q11. Under what conditions can the press not perform its duties well? [2 marks]
View Answer & Explanation
Answer: If rigid restrictions are placed on the publication of news and views, the press cannot work faithfully and fearlessly. Control by parties or business owners also forces it to publish one-sided news.
Teacher's Note:
1. Give the main reason from the fourth paragraph.
2. One more condition can be added from the fifth paragraph.
Q12. Does freedom of the press carry certain obligations? If yes, specify. [2 marks]
View Answer & Explanation
Answer: Yes. The press must publish correct news and avoid mischievous or malafide criticism of the government. It must use its power with restraint and judgment, so that liberty does not become licence.

1. Answer the yes/no part first.
2. Mention at least two duties.
