Questions

Section A: Reading, Passage 1

Read the passage and answer the questions that follow.

A bookshop is not something you find in every lane or neighbourhood these days. Books, which were once a staple diet for youngsters in their formative years, are fading out of their list of priorities.

Ask any youngster which is the latest book he has read and he will be baffled. Apart from a few consistent readers, others just bluff with a best-seller's name or blame the curriculum load, like the seventeen-year-old schoolgoer who says, "I just read my physics book".

Television has been blamed much for this calamitous situation, which is producing square-faced people and a bookless society. Furthermore, today's children are under pressure to be smart and popular, to succeed on a social level. Moreover, computers, video games, the Internet, swimming lessons, cricket and every youngster's passion for hour-long chats with friends eat up all their leisure time.

A child who is constantly under pressure to live up to his parents' expectations, at times unreasonable, does not like to throw himself into another set of books after laborious school work, unless the child comes from a family of readers where the works of Shakespeare and Dickens are just a matter of pulling them out from the shelves.

Many parents also believe that today's children have become aware and demand logical reasoning for everything. They can no longer be fooled by fairy tales or animal stories, as they have seen no fairies and no animals except the old tired ones in the city zoo.

Q1. Today's child is mostly interested in ______. [1 mark]
(a) being smart and popular
(b) playing games
(c) reading the latest books
(d) fairy tales and animal stories

(a) best-sellers
(b) the Internet
(c) a bookless society
(d) television

View Answer & Explanation

Answer: (d) television. The third paragraph says television has been blamed much for the calamitous situation.

Teacher's Note:
1. The word 'blamed' in the passage points directly to the answer.
2. The Internet is mentioned only as one of the things that eat up leisure time.

Q3. Parents' unreasonable expectations have resulted in ______. [1 mark]
(a) a calamitous situation
(b) pressure on children

Q4. Today's children have become aware and demand ______ reasoning. [1 mark]

Teacher's Note:
1. The answer is a direct phrase from the last paragraph.

Q5. What is the correct order of the information given in the passage? (A) Children are under pressure to be smart. (B) Television has been blamed for the calamitous situation. (C) Books were once a staple diet for youngsters. (D) They can no longer be fooled by fairy tales. [1 mark]
(a) C, D, B, A
(b) C, B, A, D
(c) A, B, C, D
(d) D, C, B, A

View Answer & Explanation

2. Aware is a quality of children, not the pressure on them.

Q7. True or False: Children are no longer interested in fairy tales because they have seen real fairies. [1 mark]

View Answer & Explanation

Teacher's Note:

Section A: Reading, Passage 2

Read the passage and answer the questions that follow.

1. Albert Einstein was one of the greatest scientists the world has ever known. He was truly a fascinating man. Once this great physicist was caught in a downpour. He took off his hat and held it under his coat. When asked, he explained with admirable logic that the rain would damage the hat but his hair would be none the worse for its wetting.

2. When he was four and sick in bed, his father gave him a magnetic compass. Albert turned the compass every way, and soon he was fascinated by the new toy. No matter which way he turned it, the needle always pointed in the same direction, much as Einstein's genius and fascination with nature pointed him towards a life of scientific discovery.

3. Einstein's mother introduced him to music and he became a fine violinist. He also excelled in mathematics.

4. At eleven, he studied physics at university level. But he was an independent thinker and hated the regimentation of the German school system. Schools were like barracks and teachers like military commanders for Albert. When he was sixteen, he renounced his citizenship in order to avoid joining the German army, and moved to Switzerland. He spent four years studying mathematics and physics at the renowned Zurich Polytechnic.

5. In 1933, while he was in the USA, Hitler came to power in Germany. That same year Einstein accepted a permanent appointment at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, and in 1941 he became a citizen of the USA.

6. Einstein surrendered his lifelong pacifism in 1939 when he wrote a letter to Franklin D. Roosevelt, encouraging the President to begin atomic weapon research. He felt uneasy about the rise in power of Nazi Germany and had been told that German physicists had split the uranium atom.

Q9. Why did Albert Einstein take off his hat in a downpour? (30-40 words) [2 marks]

View Answer & Explanation

Answer: He took off his hat and held it under his coat because the rain would damage the hat. His hair, he reasoned, would be none the worse for getting wet, so it was the hat that needed protection.

Teacher's Note:
1. The answer lies in the first paragraph, in Einstein's own logic.
2. Keep the reply to the 30-40 word limit.

Q10. What did Albert Einstein notice when he was given a compass? (30-40 words) [2 marks]

View Answer & Explanation

Answer: He noticed that however he turned the compass, its needle always pointed in the same direction. This fascinated the sick four-year-old and later reflected his fascination with nature.

Teacher's Note:
1. The incident happened when he was four and ill in bed.
2. Mention both what he noticed and its effect on him.

Q11. What did Einstein do in order to avoid the German army? (30-40 words) [2 marks]

View Answer & Explanation

Answer: At sixteen he gave up his German citizenship so that he would not have to join the army. He then moved to Switzerland and studied mathematics and physics at the Zurich Polytechnic.

Teacher's Note:
1. The fourth paragraph describes his dislike of the strict school system and army.
2. Name the action and where he went.

Q12. Why did Einstein feel uneasy? (30-40 words) [2 marks]

View Answer & Explanation

Answer: Einstein felt uneasy because Nazi Germany was growing powerful. He had also been told that German physicists had split the uranium atom, which made him fear the use of atomic weapons.

Teacher's Note:

2. Mention both the political and the scientific reason.
