पेंसिल से लिखना बहुत आसान है,साथ में रबड़ और शार्पनर हो,बस फिर तो मज़ा ही आ जाता है। इसी वजह से बच्चे पेंसिल को सबसे ज़्यादा पसंद करते हैं और ड्रांइग में तो बगैर पेंसिल के काम चलता ही नहीं है। पेंसिल की कहानी बहुत पुरानी है। करीब छह सौ वर्ष पहले जर्मनी में ग्रेफ़ाइट की चट्टानें मिलीं। इनका कोई टुकड़ा लेकर कागज़ या पत्थर पर लिखा जाता, तो निशान या लकीरें बन जातीं। इसके कोई डेढ़ सौ साल बाद इंग्लैंड में शुद्ध ग्रेफ़ाइट की चट्टानें मिलीं। पहले गड़रियों को इनका पता चला। वे ग्रेफ़ाइट की चट्टान का टुकड़ा लेकर अपनी भेड़ों पर निशान लगा देते। इससे उन भेड़ों को अलग से पहचान हो जाती थी। अब तो इतनी सुंदर पेंसिलें बनती हैं कि बच्चे उन्हें पाने के लिए मचल उठते हैं। ऐसी पेंसिलें जिन सुंदर-सुंदर बच्चों के हँसते-खेलते चित्र होते हैं।
