According to Abbe Lemaitre (Belgian cosmologist, 1931) the universe has evolved due to thermonuclear explosion (Big-Bang hypothesis). The term ‘Big-Bang’ was introduced in 1950 by a British Astronomer, Fred Hoyle. All galaxies are constantly moving away from each other. Our galaxy is milky way which is spiral and medium sized. Our solar system has originated by condensation (gravitational contraction) of clouds of cosmic dust and gases. The lithosphere and atmosphere were created earlier and hydrosphere later, when the temperature on earth dropped to <100oC.

IMPORTANT THEORIES REGARDING ORIGIN OF LIFE

1. Theory of spontaneous creation (Theory of abiogenesis or Autogenesis) – Anaximander, Aristotle and Plato (384 –322 BC)

According to this theory the organisms develop from the similar forms or from non living matter spontaneously. For example :
(i) Lice develop from human-sweat
(ii) Flies develop from rotten meat.
(iii) Frogs develop from mud/soil
(iv) Snakes develop from dead-man’s hair

Van Helmont supported to this theory by stating that if a sweat-wet shirt is kept in dark in a heap of wheat for 21days, the mice will appear. This theory was discarded by 3-scientists, i.e. F. Redi (1668), L. Spallanzani (1765), both Italian, and Louis Pasteur (1861), a French scientist.

F. Redi proved that fl ies do not appear from rotten meat if the container is kept covered with a parchment sheet. Only the Jars which are open show the presence of larvae (maggots) of housefl y. He stated that housefl ies develop only from the eggs and not spontaneously.
