Class: IV / Mathematics - Holiday Homework

Palindromic numbers

The numbers which read and write same forward and backward are called palindromic numbers. Eg: 121, 78,487, etc.

I. Write the palindromic numbers
a) 4-digit number: 1331
b) 5-digit number: 45654
c) 3-digit number: 242
Answer: Let a = 1331, b = 45654, and c = 242. Each of these numbers reads the same forwards and backwards.
In simple words: Palindromic numbers look identical when reversed.

Exam Tip: Check palindromes by reading digits from left-to-right and right-to-left.

II. Arrange the above a, b, c numbers in ascending and descending order.
Ascending order: 242, 1331, 45654
Descending order: 45654, 1331, 242
Answer:
Ascending order (smallest to largest): \(242 < 1331 < 45654\)
Descending order (largest to smallest): \(45654 > 1331 > 242\)
In simple words: Ascending means going up, and descending means going down.

Exam Tip: Compare numbers starting from the highest place value.

III. Find the sum of b and c
Answer:
b = 45654
c = 242
Sum = \(45654 + 242 = 45896\)
In simple words: Add the two numbers together to find the total sum.

IV. Find the difference between b and a
Answer:
b = 45654
a = 1331
Difference = \(45654 - 1331 = 44323\)
In simple words: Subtract the smaller number from the larger number.

Exam Tip: Always subtract starting from the ones place.

Note down the numbers on the cars you come across when you go out on a holiday.

(Sample car numbers for exercise: Car 1: 42124, Car 2: 3553, Car 3: 56765, Car 4: 1232)

Answer the following based on the above numbers.
a) The number formed by reversing the first number is 42124
Answer: Reversing the digits of 42124 gives 42124.
In simple words: Write the digits of the first number from back to front.

Exam Tip: Reversing a palindromic number results in the exact same number.

b) Write the expanded form of the second number
Answer: For 3553:
\(3000 + 500 + 50 + 3\)
In simple words: Expand the number according to the place value of each digit.

Exam Tip: Include zeros for place values when writing expanded forms.

c) What is the digit in thousand's place of third number?
Answer: For the third number 56765, the digit in the thousand's place is 6.
In simple words: Count from the right: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands.

Exam Tip: Identify the place value columns carefully from right to left.

d) The number formed by interchanging the tens and ones digits of fourth number is 1223
Answer: Fourth number is 1232. Interchanging tens (3) and ones (2) gives 1223.
In simple words: Swap the last two digits of the number.

Exam Tip: Only change the specific digits mentioned in the question.

e) Find the sum of the first and second numbers
Answer:
First number = 42124
Second number = 3553
Sum = \(42124 + 3553 = 45677\)
In simple words: Add the first and second car numbers together.

Exam Tip: Line up digits correctly by place value columns.

f) Find the difference between the third and fourth numbers
Answer:
Third number = 56765
Fourth number = 1232
Difference = \(56765 - 1232 = 55533\)
In simple words: Subtract the fourth number from the third number.

Exam Tip: Borrow correctly if any digit in subtraction is smaller than the bottom digit.

III. Look at the pictures and write the names of animals in the correct groups. Give one more examples for each group.

Animals with ShellAnimals with SpotsAnimals with ScalesAnimals with Fur
Snail, TortoiseLeopardFish, CrocodileCat, Rabbit, Bear
Extra: OysterExtra: CheetahExtra: SnakeExtra: Dog

Answer: Animals are classified based on their outer body covering or skin patterns.
In simple words: Group animals by their distinct physical features like shells, spots, scales, or fur.

Exam Tip: Observe the body covering carefully in biological classification questions.

IV. Look at what Sunil's mother gave him for lunch one day. Find out if this is a balanced meal. Put a tick (v) in the correct column to show what food group each item belongs to. Did this meal have something from every food group?

Chapattis✓
Ghee ✓
Dal  ✓

Answer: Yes, this meal is a balanced meal because it contains food items from all major nutrient groups (Carbohydrates, Fats, Proteins, Vitamins and Minerals, Roughage, and Water).
In simple words: A balanced meal contains all essential nutrients in the right proportions.

Exam Tip: Ensure all nutrients are accounted for when checking for a balanced diet.
