TOPIC : LARGE NUMBERS
COMPARISON OF NUMBERS
The rules to compare the numbers are as follows:
• If two numbers with different number of digits are given, then the number which has more digits is the greater of the two. Example - 7983 > 62634
(4 digits) (5 digits)
• If the two numbers have the same number of digits, start comparing the digits from the extreme left place of the numbers. The number having the greater digit on the extreme left is greater. Example- 54326 < 63258 (since 6 > 5)
• If the digits on the extreme left place of both numbers are the same, then compare the second digit from the left. The number having the greater digit in this place is greater. Example- 93245 < 96643 (since 3<6)
• If the two digits from the extreme left of both the numbers are the same, then we compare the third digit from the left of the number and so on. Example- 32479 > 32469 (since 7 > 6)
FORMATION OF GREATEST AND SMALLEST NUMBERS
We can use the above rules to write the greatest or the smallest number formed by any given digits. Example- To form the greatest number from 8,4,9,3and2 , start with the greatest digit. The next greatest digit is placed on its right and so on, till all the digits are used up. Here , we have 9>8>4>3>2. So the greatest number formed is 98432.
To form the smallest number , start with the smallest digit. Then comes the next greatest digit to its right, and so on. Here, the smallest number is 23489.
