2. Make a pattern using different freehand shapes.
3. Complete the pattern given below.
4. Identify the geometric shapes in the pattern above and, using them, create your own design.
Teacher's Note
Patterns are all around us. Look at the designs on your school uniform or the tiles on your kitchen wall. They all have repeating shapes.
Exam Trick
Remember: A pattern repeats the same shape or design again and again. When you complete a pattern, look at what comes first and what comes next, then repeat it.
Points to Remember
Patterns are made by repeating shapes in order.
Geometric patterns use shapes like circles, squares, and triangles.
Freehand patterns are made by drawing shapes freely by hand.
You can make patterns using any shapes you like.
Patterns In Multiplication Tables
Look at the 9 times table. Note the sequence of numbers in the units places of the table. What pattern do you see? Now note the sequence of numbers in the tens places of the table. Find the pattern in it.
Exercise
1. Look at the 5 times table. 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75... Find the pattern in the digits in the units places of this table. Is there a pattern in the tens digits in this table?
2. Write the 10 times table. Look at the digits in the units place of this table. What is the pattern there?
3. Write the 2 times table till 2 × 15 = 30. Look at the digits in the units place from 2 × 1 = 2 up to 2 × 15 = 30. Find the pattern.
4. Complete the multiplications given below. Find a pattern in the products. 6 × 10 = 60 and 7 × 10 = 70. 6 × 100 = 600 and 7 × 100 = 700. 6 × 1000 = and 7 × 1000 =. 6 × 10,000 = and 7 × 10,000 =.
5. Multiply 37 by 3, 6, 9..., 27 in that order. Observe the patterns in the products.
Activity: Create patterns using various geometric shapes. Look at the designs on different fabrics and find the patterns. Make your own designs. Dip a cross section of a bhindi in paint and use it as a stamp to make a design.
Teacher's Note
Patterns help us understand math better. When you look at the 5 times table, you see all answers end in 5 or 0. This pattern helps you check if your answer is correct.
Exam Trick
Remember: In the 10 times table, every answer ends in 0. In the 5 times table, answers end in either 5 or 0. Use these patterns to find answers quickly.
Points to Remember
Number patterns repeat in multiplication tables.
The 5 times table ends in 5 or 0.
The 10 times table always ends in 0.
When you multiply by 10, just add a 0 to the number.
