Teacher's Note
In India, when you go to a shop, you can exchange a big note for smaller coins and notes. For example, if you have a 10 rupee note, the shopkeeper can give you 10 coins of 1 rupee.
Exam Trick
Remember: The smaller the coin or note, the more you need of it. If 1 rupee = 2 coins of 50 paise, then you always need 2 smaller coins to make 1 bigger one.
Points to Remember
1 rupee = 2 coins of 50 paise
2 rupees = 4 coins of 50 paise or 2 coins of 1 rupee
5 rupees = 5 coins of 1 rupee or 10 coins of 50 paise
10 rupees = 10 coins of 1 rupee or 5 coins of 2 rupees
You can exchange bigger notes for smaller ones in many ways
Exchanging Big Notes For Smaller Ones
A mother has a 500 rupee note. She needs to buy milk for 452 rupees. She does not have any change to give. So she asks Nandu to go to the shop and get change for this 500 rupee note.
Nandu brings the change. He gets four 100 rupee notes, two 20 rupee notes, and five 10 rupee coins.
The change for a 50 rupee note is two 20 rupee notes and one 10 rupee note. Or it is five 10 rupee notes. Describe other ways of getting change for the note.
The change for a 20 rupee note is four 5 rupee coins or two 10 rupee coins or one 10 rupee coin and two 5 rupee coins. Describe other ways of getting change for the note.
Teacher's Note
In real life, when you buy something from a shop, you may not have the exact money. So you give a bigger note and ask for change. The shopkeeper gives you smaller notes and coins back. This happens in every shop in India.
Exam Trick
Remember: Change = What you gave - What you have to pay. If you give 500 rupees for something worth 452 rupees, your change is 48 rupees. The shopkeeper will give you this 48 rupees in smaller notes and coins.
Points to Remember
Change is the money you get back after you pay
A 50 rupee note = two 20 rupee notes and one 10 rupee note
A 20 rupee note = four 5 rupee coins or two 10 rupee coins
You can get change in many different ways
Always check your change when you buy something
The Change For A 1000-Rupee Note Is
1000 rupees = 20 rupee notes or 50 rupee notes or 100 rupee notes or 500 rupee notes
Small notes and coins can also be exchanged for a single bigger note or coin.
Two 100 rupee notes, three 50 rupee notes, and three 20 rupee notes = 1 note of 500 rupees
Or two 100 rupee notes, three 50 rupee notes, and three 20 rupee notes = 1 note of 500 rupees equals a different way to make 500 rupees
Three 100 rupee notes, three 50 rupee notes, and four 10 rupee coins = 1 note of 500 rupees
Teacher's Note
When you have many small notes and coins, you can ask the bank or shopkeeper to exchange them for one big note. This is like collecting small amounts of money and turning it into one bigger amount, just like saving pocket money.
Exam Trick
Remember: To make a 1000 rupee note, you need 10 notes of 100 rupees. Or you can use 20 notes of 50 rupees. Count the total value, not the number of notes.
Points to Remember
1000 rupees = 10 notes of 100 rupees
1000 rupees = 20 notes of 50 rupees
You can make a big note using many small notes
Always add the values correctly
Different combinations can make the same total value
