“હું ડાકુઓને તાબે નહિ થાઉં એ નક્કી. હું મારા માણસો અને નોકરો સાથે તેમનો સામનો કરીશ. તને શું લાગે છે?” “મને લાગે છે કે ડાકુઓ સામે લડવામાં માલ નથી, કારણ કે તેઓ વધારે શક્તિશાળી છે." "તો આપણે બીજું શું કરી શકીએ?" બાપુરાવે પૂછ્યું. હવે અંધારું થઈ ગયું હતું. આખુંય ગામ શાંત હતું. પાર્વતીબાઈએ તેના નોકરોને અને બે રસોઇયાને બોલાવ્યા. તેણે તેમને પચાસ માણસો માટે શાહી જમણ તૈયાર કરવા કહ્યું. "મધરાત સુધીમાં જમણ તૈયાર થઈ જવું જોઈએ,” તેણે મુખ્ય રસોઇયાને કહ્યું.

નોકરોને આશ્ચર્ય થયું પણ તેમણે કામ શરૂ કરી દીધું. તે કામ પર ધ્યાન આપી રહી હતી. જમણની તૈયારી થઈ ગઈ હતી. તેણે નવી સાડી પહેરી. તેણે મંગળસૂત્ર સિવાય બધાં જ ઘરેણાં થાળીમાં ગોઠવ્યાં અને રાહ જોતી ઊભી રહી.

“આવો ભાઈ, અંદર આવો." મખ્ખનસિંહને આ સાંભળીને આશ્ચર્ય થયું. તેણે (પાર્વતીબાઈ) આગળ કહ્યું: “તમારે માટે અને આ ભાઈઓ માટે હું સાંજથી રાહ જોઈ રહી છું." ડાકુઓને આવા અણધાર્યા આવકારથી આશ્ચર્ય થયું. કૃપા કરી અંદર આવો. સમય વેડફો નહીં. તમે થાકી ગયા હશો. હાથપગ ધુઓ, વાળું તૈયાર છે. સ્વાદિષ્ટ ભોજન કરી લો અને પછી તમારું કામ કરો.” મખ્ખનસિંહ હજુ ઢચુપચુ હતો, પણ તેણે તેમને બેસવા કહ્યું.
