One such dacoit was Makhkhansinh. He was dangerous and had a strong gang. He had now become very bold. He sent advance warning to the people about his raid. If anyone tried to play any trick, he gave them severe punishment. The villagers tried to resist the dacoits but they failed.

And you have called me 'brother' and given me a brother's welcome. From today you are my sister and I will take care of you.” Saying this he returned the thali of valuables to her. He also ordered his men to free her husband whom they had caught outside the village.

મખ્ખનસિંહ આવો જ એક ડાકુ હતો. એ ખતરનાક હતો અને તેની પાસે ખડતલ ટોળી હતી. હવે તે ખૂબ જ બહાદુર બની ગયો હતો. પોતાની ધાડ પાડવાની ચેતવણી તે લોકોને અગાઉથી મોકલી આપતો. કોઈ પણ ચાલાકી કરવાનો પ્રયાસ કરે તો તે તેમને સખત સજા કરતો. ગ્રામજનોએ ડાકુઓનો પ્રતિકાર કરવાનો પ્રયાસ કર્યો પણ તેઓ નિષ્ફળ ગયા. તમે આ ગામમાં રહેતા હોત તો તમે શું કર્યું હોત? એક દિવસ બાપુરાવ નામના એક પૈસાદાર માણસને જાસો મળ્યો: "આજે રાતે તમારા ઘર પર ધાડ પાડીશું.” સાથે સામાન્ય ચેતવણી પણ આપવામાં આવી : "કીમતી ચીજો છુપાવવી નહિ અને પોલીસને ખબર કરવી નડિ."

બાપુરાવ તો આ સાંભળીને ફિક્કા પડી ગયા. તેને મોટી હવેલી અને ઘણા નોકરો હતા. તેનાં કબાટો કીમતી ચીજોથી છલકાતાં હતાં. તેને ચિંતા થવા લાગી. પણ તેની પત્ની પાર્વતીબાઈ બહાદુર અને હોશિયાર સ્ત્રી હતી. જ્યારે તેણે (બાપુરાવ) તેને (પાર્વતીબાઈને) આ વાત કરી, ત્યારે તેણે (પાર્વતીબાઈએ) તેને પૂછ્યું, “તમે શું કરવા ધારો છો?"

“હું ડાકુઓને તાબે નહિ થાઉં એ નક્કી. હું મારા માણસો અને નોકરો સાથે તેમનો સામનો કરીશ. તને શું લાગે છે?” “મને લાગે છે કે ડાકુઓ સામે લડવામાં માલ નથી, કારણ કે તેઓ વધારે શક્તિશાળી છે." "તો આપણે બીજું શું કરી શકીએ?" બાપુરાવે પૂછ્યું. "મને લાગે છે કે આપણે કંઈક ચાલાકી કરીને ડાકુઓને પરાસ્ત કરવા જોઈએ,” પાર્વતીએ વિચાર કરતાં કહ્યું. “પણ કેવી રીતે! તારી ઘરેણાંની પેટી આપણે ક્યાંક છુપાવી દઈશું ... જેમ કે ગમાણમાં છાણના ઢગલામાં?” “મને વિચારવા દો," તેણે કહ્યું. “ત્યાં સુધીમાં તમને જે યોગ્ય લાગે તે તમે કરો. હું મારી રીતે તેમની સામે લડીશ. ચિંતા કરશો નહિ."

બાપુરાવને થોડી રાહત થઈ. તેને મદદ કરે તેવા માણસોની શોધમાં તે શહેરમાં ગયા અને પાર્વતીબાઈ ક્યાંય સુધી વિચાર કરતાં બેસી રહ્યાં. સાંજ પડી ગઈ. બાપુરાવે આવીને તેની પત્નીને કહ્યું, “મેં વીસેક માણસો એકઠા કર્યા છે. ગામની સીમ પાસેના જંગલમાં અમે સંતાઈ જઈશું. ડાકુઓ ગામમાં પેસે તે પહેલાં જ અમે તેમના પર હુમલો કરીશું."

હવે અંધારું થઈ ગયું હતું. આખુંય ગામ શાંત હતું. પાર્વતીબાઈએ તેના નોકરોને અને બે રસોઇયાને બોલાવ્યા. તેણે તેમને પચાસ માણસો માટે શાહી જમણ તૈયાર કરવા કહ્યું. "મધરાત સુધીમાં જમણ તૈયાર થઈ જવું જોઈએ,” તેણે મુખ્ય રસોઇયાને કહ્યું.

નોકરોને આશ્ચર્ય થયું પણ તેમણે કામ શરૂ કરી દીધું. તે કામ પર ધ્યાન આપી રહી હતી. જમણની તૈયારી થઈ ગઈ હતી. તેણે નવી સાડી પહેરી. તેણે મંગળસૂત્ર સિવાય બધાં જ ઘરેણાં થાળીમાં ગોઠવ્યાં અને રાહ જોતી ઊભી રહી.

કલ્પના કરો તેની યુક્તિ શી હોઈ શકે? મધરાત થતાં જ તેણે કંઈક અવાજ સાંભળ્યો. ધોડાઓ આવી રહ્યા હતા. અવાજ વધારે નજીક આવ્યો. એકાએક બારણે જોરથી ટકોરા પડ્યા. તે ડરી ગઈ પણ બીજી જ ક્ષણે તે સ્વસ્થ થઈ ગઈ. તેણે ઝડપથી દરવાજે જઈને દરવાજો ખોલ્યો. દૂર દેખાતો એક કદાવર માણસ હાથમાં બંદૂક લઈને તેની સામે ઊભો હતો. પાર્વતીબાઈ ડરી ગઈ હતી પણ હિંમતપૂર્વક ખૂબ મીઠાશથી કહ્યું:

“આવો ભાઈ, અંદર આવો." મખ્ખનસિંહને આ સાંભળીને આશ્ચર્ય થયું. તેણે (પાર્વતીબાઈ) આગળ કહ્યું: “તમારે માટે અને આ ભાઈઓ માટે હું સાંજથી રાહ જોઈ રહી છું." ડાકુઓને આવા અણધાર્યા આવકારથી આશ્ચર્ય થયું. કૃપા કરી અંદર આવો. સમય વેડફો નહીં. તમે થાકી ગયા હશો. હાથપગ ધુઓ, વાળું તૈયાર છે. સ્વાદિષ્ટ ભોજન કરી લો અને પછી તમારું કામ કરો.” મખ્ખનસિંહ હજુ ઢચુપચુ હતો, પણ તેણે તેમને બેસવા કહ્યું.

તેણે નોકરોને ગરમાગરમ ભોજન પીરસવા કહ્યું. તેઓ જ્યારે જમતા હતા ત્યારે તે દરેક પર વ્યક્તિગત ધ્યાન આપતી હતી. જમી લીધા પછી તે ઘરેણાંથી ભરેલી થાળી લઈ આવી. તેણે તે મુખ્ય ડાકુની સામે મૂકી. પછી તેણે કહ્યું, “મારી પાસે જે છે તે આ છે, પણ મેં એક નંગ મારા માટે રાખ્યું છે.” તેણે ગળામાંનું મંગળસૂત્ર દેખાડીને કહ્યું, “મારા પતિના દીર્ધાયુ માટે આ પવિત્ર પ્રતીક હું પહેરું છું. એ ન લેવા હું તમને વિનવું છું." ડાકુનો સરદાર હવે શું કરશે? ડાકુનો સરદાર જાત પર કાબૂ રાખી શક્યો નહિ.

અવાજમાં ક્ષોભ સાથે તેણે કહ્યું :"અલબત્ત, હું એ નહિ લઉં. અમે તમારું લૂણ ખાધું છે. અને તમે મને ભાઈ કહીને ભાઈ જેવો આવકાર આપ્યો છે. આજથી તું મારી બહેન છે અને હું તારી સંભાળ લઈશ." આમ કહીને તેણે ઘરેણાં ભરેલી થાળી પાછી આપી. તેણે તેના માણસોને ગામ બહાર પકડી રાખેલા તેના પતિને છોડી મૂકવાનો હુકમ કર્યો. બીજે દિવસે સવારે આ વાત સાંભળી ગ્રામજનોને આશ્ચર્ય થયું. ત્યારથી પાર્વતીબાઈના ઘેર કોઈ ડાકુઓએ હુમલો કર્યો નથી. આજે પણ તેઓ ગામનાં બાળકોને આ વાત કહે છે. બાહુબળ કરતાં બુદ્ધિ બહાદુર છે.
