Summary

‘Matilda was a pretty lady, born in a poor family. She was married to a clerk. She suffered a lot of misery as she felt that she had been born for better things. One day, her husband came home very happy. He had an invitation to a Ball for both of them from the Minister of Public Instruction. He thought his wife would be happy, but she only got angry and threw the invitation card on the table. On being asked why she reacted in such a manner, she replied that she did not have proper dress for the party. Her loving husband gave her all the money he had set aside. When the dress was ready, Matilda’s husband saw that still she was not happy. On being asked the reason, she said that she had no jewels. He told her to borrow jewellery from her dear friend — Mrs. Forestier. Matilda borrowed a diamond necklace from her. She was a great hit at the party. On reaching home, she decided to take a final look at herself. She was terribly shocked when she found the necklace was missing. They looked everywhere for it, but it was nowhere to be found. They went to the police and also put an advertisement in the papers. In the meantime, they wrote to Madame Forestier that the clasp was broken and also that they would get the necklace repaired and return it. When the necklace was not found, they decided to replace it with a similar necklace. They bought it for forty thousand Francs, and had to take a loan for it. In order to repay the loan, they took a rented room and turned away the maid. Mr. Loisel took up overtime work to save money. This life continued for almost ten long years. One day she happened to meet Mrs. Forestier who still looked young. Matilda told her the whole story. Shocked at the story, Mrs. Forestier told her a shocking truth i.e. the diamond necklace that she had lent to Matilda had been made of artificial diamonds and was worth only five hundred francs.

‘मटिल्डा एक सुंदर महिला थी, जिसका जन्म एक गरीब परिवार में हुआ था। उसकी शादी एक क्लर्क से हुई थी। उसे बहुत दुख हुआ क्योंकि उसे लगा कि वह बेहतर चीजों के लिए पैदा हुई है। एक दिन उसका पति बहुत खुश होकर घर आया। उन्हें लोक शिक्षा मंत्री की ओर से उन दोनों के लिए एक गेंद का निमंत्रण मिला था। उसने सोचा कि उसकी पत्नी खुश होगी, लेकिन उसने केवल गुस्से में आकर निमंत्रण पत्र मेज पर फेंक दिया। यह पूछे जाने पर कि उन्होंने इस तरह से प्रतिक्रिया क्यों दी, उन्होंने जवाब दिया कि उनके पास पार्टी के लिए उचित पोशाक नहीं है। उसके प्यारे पति ने उसे वह सारा पैसा दे दिया जो उसने अलग रखा था। जब पोशाक तैयार हो गई, तो मटिल्डा के पति ने देखा कि वह अभी भी खुश नहीं है। कारण पूछने पर उसने कहा कि उसके पास कोई जेवर नहीं है। उसने उससे कहा कि वह अपने प्रिय मित्र – मिसेज फॉरेस्टियर से आभूषण उधार ले। मटिल्डा ने उससे हीरे का हार उधार लिया। वह पार्टी में काफी हिट रहीं। घर पहुंचने पर, उसने खुद को अंतिम रूप देने का फैसला किया। हार न मिलने पर वह बुरी तरह सहम गई। उन्होंने इसकी हर जगह तलाश की, लेकिन वह कहीं नहीं मिला। वे पुलिस के पास गए और अखबारों में विज्ञापन भी डाला। इस बीच, उन्होंने मैडम फॉरेस्टियर को लिखा कि अकवार टूट गया है और यह भी कि वे हार की मरम्मत करवाकर उसे वापस कर देंगे। जब हार नहीं मिली, तो उन्होंने इसे उसी तरह के हार से बदलने का फैसला किया। उन्होंने इसे चालीस हज़ार फ़्रैंक में ख़रीदा और इसके लिए उन्हें क़र्ज़ लेना पड़ा। कर्ज चुकाने के लिए उन्होंने किराए का कमरा लिया और नौकरानी को भगा दिया। मिस्टर लोइसल ने पैसे बचाने के लिए ओवरटाइम का काम किया। यह जीवन लगभग दस वर्षों तक चलता रहा। एक दिन उसकी मुलाकात मिसेज फॉरेस्टियर से हुई जो अभी भी जवान लग रही थी। मटिल्डा ने उसे पूरी कहानी सुनाई। कहानी से चौंक गई, श्रीमती फॉरेस्टियर ने उसे एक चौंकाने वाला सच बताया यानी हीरे का हार जो उसने मटिल्डा को दिया था, वह कृत्रिम हीरे से बना था और उसकी कीमत केवल पांच सौ फ़्रैंक थी।
