Questions

Section A: Reading

Q1.

Read the passage and answer the questions.

On one fine autumn day, Dr. John Watson stood at the door and called out for his friend, Mr. Sherlock Holmes. He saw his friend fully occupied in an intense conversation with a burly, red-faced gentleman, who was old and had fiery red hair.

"Oh! Please excuse me," said Watson, still standing at the door. "I did not mean to interrupt."

"No, not at all," said Holmes. He then turned to his guest. "Dr. Watson has been a great help to me in solving most of my successful cases, and I am certain he will be just as useful in your case, Mr. Wilson. Watson, meet Mr. Jabez Wilson. He had just begun telling me a story which is surely one of the most bizarre I have heard in recent times."

The bulky man nodded at Dr. Watson. Jabez Wilson relaxed on the sofa, drew out a wrinkled, messy paper and laid it on his knees. It was a page cramped with all kinds of classified ads. Meanwhile, Watson began to study him, applying all he had learned from his friend. Wilson's clothes showed him to be an ordinary British tradesman. Despite this, he wore a heavy vest chain with a small triangular piece of metal hanging from it, which caught Watson's eye. Except for his blazing red hair and a face filled with anger, there was nothing notable about him.

A bird came down the walk
He did not know I saw;
He bit an angleworm in halves
And ate the fellow, raw.
And then he drank a dew
From a convenient grass,
And then hopped sidewise to the wall
To let a beetle pass.
He glanced with rapid eyes
That hurried all abroad,
They looked like frightened beads, I thought;
He stirred his velvet head
Like one in danger, cautious;
I offered him a crumb
And he unrolled his feathers
And rowed him softer home

Q11. 11. The monthly income of a family is: salary ₹26,000, rent ₹2,500, interest from savings ₹3,000, overtime ₹2,000 and income from land in the village ₹4,000. The monthly expenditure is: housing loan instalment ₹11,000, children's education ₹6,000, milk, food and vegetables ₹7,000, electricity ₹4,500, phone bills ₹800, clothes ₹1,800 and miscellaneous ₹1,500. Interpret the data in a short paragraph. [4 marks]

View Answer & Explanation

Answer: The family earns ₹37,500 a month (26,000 + 2,500 + 3,000 + 2,000 + 4,000). Salary is the main source, making up about 69% of the income. Total spending is ₹32,600 (11,000 + 6,000 + 7,000 + 4,500 + 800 + 1,800 + 1,500). The largest expense is the housing loan instalment, followed by food and children's education. The family therefore saves about ₹4,900 each month, which is a sensible margin.
