Questions

Passage 1: Whales

Whales are normally gentle. They show every sign of wishing to spare man from harm. Many whales show strong family ties. The young ones remain with their parents for up to 15 years or more. Like reindeer and other nomadic land mammals, such migrating species as humpbacks and grey whales live in herds or pods, and travel seasonally between feeding and breeding grounds.

In times of stress, whales look after one another. A group migrates at the speed of the slowest baby. Maternal instincts are also highly developed. Because a calf is born under water, the mother must get it to the surface before it drowns. Often another whale will help in such situations. Mother whales behave like human beings. They have been seen fondling their babies. Their flippers are used like hands to clasp, coax and discipline their babies.

As whales mature slowly and do not reproduce quickly, accurate information about them is necessary. Endangered species are species which would soon become extinct. Plant and animal species are getting extinct at an alarming rate. Increasing human population, loss of habitat and food resources, pollution and brutal hunting of animals are among the chief reasons of extinction.

Passage 2: Kite Aerial Photography

Nicholas Chorier is not your usual photographer. He is a kite aerial photographer. He uses a kite to hoist his camera into the skies and clicks photographs while the camera dangles precariously mid-air. As a teenager, Nicholas had two passions – photography and kite flying. During a trip to India to make a photo report on kite making, he learnt about this unique style of photography. Fascinated, he literally tied his two hobbies together for a living. Nicholas learnt to make strong kites modelled on the Japanese kite, Rokkaku, that could endure harsh winds. A novice in his chosen field, he then set out to train himself. Today he is one of the most well-known kite aerial photographers in the world.

The technique is to tie a cradle containing the photography equipment to the string of the kite and then fly it, thus launching the camera into the air from the ground. Nicholas manipulates the angles of the camera with a remote. An air-to-ground video link enables him to see the view from the kite's vantage point. Once satisfied with the frame, he clicks a picture.

However, the job does have its pitfalls too. Once, his kite disappeared in the Yamuna with his expensive camera. He is especially fond of India, having made a couple of trips and taken many spectacular photographs. He recently released a book, “A Kite's Eye View: India between Earth and Sky”. Though it includes photographs of oft-taken sites like the Taj Mahal, it shows them from a totally different perspective.
