Parts of Speech
What Are Parts of Speech?
Every word in a sentence does a particular job. Grouping words by the job they do gives us the parts of speech. English has eight of them: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction and interjection. The same word may belong to different parts of speech in different sentences, so we always decide by looking at how a word is used.
The Eight Parts of Speech
| Part of speech | What it does | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Noun | Names a person, place, thing or idea | man, college, John, happiness |
| Pronoun | Takes the place of a noun | she, we, they, it |
| Verb | Shows an action or a state of being | jump, play, write, become |
| Adjective | Describes a noun or pronoun | pretty, old, blue, smart |
| Adverb | Describes a verb, an adjective or another adverb | gently, extremely, carefully, well |
| Preposition | Comes before a noun or pronoun and links it to the rest of the sentence | by, with, about, until |
| Conjunction | Joins words, phrases, clauses or sentences | and, but, or, while, because |
| Interjection | Shows a sudden feeling | Oh! Wow! Oops! |
Noun
A noun is a naming word. It can name a person (man, John), a place (college), a thing, or an idea or feeling (happiness).
Pronoun
A pronoun is used instead of a noun so that we need not repeat the same name again and again. Examples are she, we, they and it.
Verb
A verb tells what someone does or what something is: jump, play, write, become. A sentence can have a main verb and one or more helping verbs. In 'She can sing', the main verb is sing and the helping verb is can. A verb must agree with its subject in number, singular or plural, and it changes its form to show tense (the time of the action).
Adjective
An adjective gives more information about a noun or a pronoun. It usually tells which one, what kind or how many, for example pretty, old, blue and smart.
Adverb
An adverb adds meaning to a verb, an adjective or another adverb. It tells when, where, how, why, under what conditions or to what degree something happens. Many adverbs end in -ly, such as gently, extremely and carefully; well is an adverb without -ly.
Preposition
A preposition stands before a noun or pronoun and forms a phrase that adds information to another word in the sentence. Examples: by, with, about, until. The phrases they form are by the tree, with our friends, about the book and until tomorrow.
Conjunction
A conjunction is a linking word. It connects words, phrases, clauses or whole sentences. Common conjunctions are and, but, or, while and because.
Interjection
An interjection bursts out to show a feeling such as surprise or joy. It is often written with an exclamation mark: Oh!, Wow!, Oops!

Answer:
Here 'sofa' is a noun. It is the object of the preposition 'on'.
Example 2. I slept on the sofa bed.
