Long Answer Questions
Question 1. Imagine yourself as the poet. You decide to write a reflective diary entry about the theme explored in your poem. Describe the inspiration behind the poem and the emotions you aim convey through your words.
Answer: 8 May 20XX, Monday 4 p.m.
Dear Diary,
Today, as I sat down to write this poem, my thoughts were about a simple incident—a boy losing his beloved ball. It sparked a realisation within me, igniting a fire of inspiration. The emotions I aim to convey through my words are those of profound loss and the weight it carries. I want to capture the depth of sadness the boy felt as his cherished memories slipped away with the ball. It was about more than just a material possession. I want to emphasize how important it is to learn to endure hardship and accept the unavoidable losses in life. I want to use this poem to remind people of the strength that resides deep within our own souls.

Question 2. You have been chosen to address the school assembly, to speak on the epistemology of loss and the resilience of the human spirit during times of crisis. Prepare the speech draft, with reference to the commonality of themes in The Ball Poem’ by John Berryman and ‘From the Diary of Anne Frank’. You may begin this way : Good morning everyone. Today, I’d like to discuss two pieces of literature that offer a powerful insight into how to deal with loss and the resilience of the human spirit required during times of crisis. You may end this way : To conclude, I’d like to say that ______ Thank you. (CBSE 2024)
Answer: Good morning everyone.
Today, I'd like to discuss two pieces of literature that offer a powerful insight into how to deal with loss and the resilience of the human spirit required during times of crisis. In "The Ball Poem" by John Berryman and the excerpt from Anne Frank's diary, we see a common theme of loss and its impact on individuals. In Berryman's poem, a young boy is shown struggling after losing his ball. Comparably, during the turbulent years of World War II, Anne Frank writes in her diary about her feelings of loss and loneliness. These works impart lessons about the struggles of life and the importance of resilience in the face of challenges.
To conclude, I'd like to say that these pieces of literature serve as poignant reminders of our capacity to grow from the challenges that life throws at us rather than giving up. Thank you.
Question 3. You have been asked to present an evaluation on “The Ball Poem” and "A Sermon at Benares”. Both the poem and the story highlight the experience of losing something and the profound impact it can have on a person. Write this presentation draft including your insights, in about 120 words, and suggest how we can apply this understanding of loss and impermanence to find meaning and resilience in our own lives. You may begin this way: Today, I want to talk about two amazing pieces: “The Ball Poem” and “The Sermon at Benares”. Both the poem and the story explore ______. You may end like this: Understanding loss and accepting that things change can help ______
Answer: Today, I want to talk about two amazing pieces: “The Ball Poem” and “The Sermon at Benares”. Both the poem and the story explore the pain of losing something precious and the lesson that loss is a part of life.
In ‘The Ball Poem’, a boy loses his ball in the harbour and learns the ‘epistemology of loss’ — that money cannot buy back what is gone. In ‘The Sermon at Benares’, Kisa Gotami loses her only son and learns from the Buddha that death is common to all. Both learn to accept their loss rather than be crushed by it.
We too can apply this understanding. When we lose something, we should grieve, accept the change and move on, valuing what we still have.
Understanding loss and accepting that things change can help us find peace, grow stronger and live with resilience.
Question 4. In the story 'Madam Rides the Bus' and the poem 'The Ball Poem' both the kids transform into mature human beings in their respective situations. Prepare the speech draft in not more than 120 words, with reference to the commonality of themes in both pieces of work. You may begin this way: Good morning, everyone. Today, I'd like to discuss two pieces of literature that offer a powerful insight into ______
Answer: Good morning, everyone.
Today, I'd like to discuss two pieces of literature that offer a powerful insight into how children grow up through experience. In ‘Madam Rides the Bus’, eight-year-old Valli plans her first bus ride and enjoys it, but on the way back she sees a cow lying dead on the road. The sight of death makes her quiet and thoughtful. In ‘The Ball Poem’, a boy loses his ball and learns for the first time that loss is a part of life and that money cannot buy back what is gone.
Both children face a painful truth and come out of it more mature. Their experiences remind us that growing up means learning to accept life’s realities with courage.
Thank you.
Question 5. Why does the poet not offer money to the boy to buy another ball?
Answer: The poet says “I will not intrude on him” because the boy, for the first time in his life, experiences the grief of losing a much loved possession, i.e., his ball. He does not want to disturb the boy as he wants him to feel what it is like to lose something. The poet wants him to be able to cope with his loss. He does not offer him ‘money’ to buy another ball because he wants the boy to understand that money cannot buy everything. He wants him to be responsible enough to let go of things and move on in life. Once something is lost, it may never be restored. This realisation will help him have a mature outlook towards life.
