Questions

Section A: Reading, Passage 1

Read the passage and answer the questions.

If you are addicted to coffee, and doctors warn you to quit the habit, do not worry and just keep relishing the beverage, because it is not that bad after all. According to a new study, the steaming cup of Java can beat fruits and vegetables as the primary source of antioxidants in the American diet, and both caffeinated and decaf versions appear to provide similar antioxidant levels.

Antioxidants in general have been linked to a number of potential health benefits, including protection against heart diseases and cancer, but Vinson, a dietician, said that their benefits ultimately depend on how they are absorbed and utilised in the body. The research says that coffee outranks popular antioxidant sources like tea, milk, chocolate and cranberries. Of all the foods and beverages studied, dates actually have the most antioxidants based solely on serving size, but since dates are not consumed anywhere near the level of coffee, the drink comes out as the top source of antioxidants, Vinson said.

Besides keeping you alert and awake, coffee has been linked to an increasing number of potential health benefits, including protection against liver and colon cancer, type 2 diabetes and Parkinson's disease, according to some recently published studies. The researchers, however, advise that one should consume coffee in moderation, because it can make you jittery and cause stomach pains.

Q1. What do doctors advise us about the habit of drinking coffee? [1 mark]

View Answer & Explanation

Answer: Doctors warn people who are addicted to coffee to quit the habit.

Teacher's Note:
1. The passage opens with this warning.
2. It is then contrasted with the study's findings.

View Answer & Explanation

Answer: The two versions are caffeinated coffee and decaf (decaffeinated) coffee.

Teacher's Note:
1. Both are named in the first paragraph.

Teacher's Note:
1. The second paragraph lists these benefits.
2. Any two health benefits named there earn full credit.

Q4. What does Vinson say about the consumption of antioxidants? [1 mark]

View Answer & Explanation

Answer: Vinson says that the benefits of antioxidants ultimately depend on how they are absorbed and utilised in the body.

Teacher's Note:
1. The statement is attributed to him in the second paragraph.
2. It stresses absorption, not just intake.

Q5. Name any two popular sources of antioxidants. [1 mark]

View Answer & Explanation

Answer: Tea, milk, chocolate and cranberries are popular sources; any two may be named.

Teacher's Note:
1. These are the sources the research says coffee outranks.
2. Name any two exactly as given.

Q6. How does coffee outrank dates in the level of antioxidants? [1 mark]

View Answer & Explanation

Answer: Dates have the most antioxidants per serving, but people eat far fewer dates than they drink coffee. So, in the overall diet, coffee becomes the top source of antioxidants.

Teacher's Note:
1. The ranking depends on total consumption and not on serving size.
2. Both ideas should appear in the answer.

Q7. Mention any two benefits of coffee. [1 mark]

View Answer & Explanation

Answer: Coffee keeps a person alert and awake, and it has been linked to protection against liver and colon cancer, type 2 diabetes and Parkinson's disease.

Teacher's Note:

2. Keep each in one clear phrase.

Q8. What do the researchers warn us about the excessive use of coffee? [1 mark]

Teacher's Note:
1. This is the final point of the passage.
2. Mention both effects.

Q9. What do the researchers advise us? [1 mark]

View Answer & Explanation

Answer: They advise that coffee should be consumed in moderation.

Teacher's Note:
1. The advice is stated in the last sentence.
2. A short direct answer is enough.

Section A: Reading, Passage 2 (answer the first five in 30-40 words each)

Read the passage and answer the questions.

1. Globalisation, liberalisation and the free market are some of the most significant modern trends in economics. Most economists in our country seem captivated by the spell of the free market. Consequently, nothing seems good or normal that does not accord with the requirements of the free market. A price that is determined by the seller or, for that matter, established by anyone other than the aggregate of consumers seems pernicious. Accordingly, it requires a major act of will to think of price-fixing as both normal and having a valuable economic function. In fact, price-fixing is normal in all industrialised societies because the industrial system itself provides, as an effortless consequence of its own development, the price-fixing that it requires. Modern industrial planning requires and rewards great size. Hence a comparatively small number of large firms will be competing for the same group of consumers. That each large firm will act with consideration of its own needs and thus avoid selling its product for more than its competitors charge is commonly recognised by advocates of free-market economic theories. But each large firm will also act with full consideration of the needs that it has in common with the other large firms competing for the same customers. Each large firm will thus avoid significant price-cutting, because price-cutting will be prejudicial to the common interest in a stable demand for the products. Most economists do not see price-fixing when it occurs because they expect it to be brought about by a number of explicit agreements among large firms; it is not.

2. Moreover, those economists who argue that allowing the free market to operate without interference is the most efficient method of establishing prices have not considered the economics of non-socialist countries. Most of these economies employ international price-fixing, usually in an overt fashion. Formal price-fixing by cartel and informal price-fixing by agreements covering the members of an industry are commonplace. Were there something peculiarly efficient about the free market and inefficient about price-fixing, the countries that have avoided the first and used the second would have suffered drastically in their economic development. There is no indication that they have.

Q10. Why does the author feel that a price fixed by the seller seems pernicious? [1 mark]

View Answer & Explanation

Answer: Most economists are captivated by the free market. For them, any price not set by the aggregate of consumers appears harmful and abnormal.

Teacher's Note:
1. The answer rests on the first paragraph's reasoning.
2. Write 30-40 words in your own phrasing.

Q11. What are the most significant trends of the modern economy? [1 mark]

View Answer & Explanation

Answer: Globalisation, liberalisation and the free market are the most significant modern economic trends.

Teacher's Note:
1. These three trends open the passage.
2. Name all three.

Q12. What does industrial planning insist on? [1 mark]

View Answer & Explanation

Answer: Modern industrial planning requires and rewards great size. As a result, only a few large firms compete for the same group of consumers.

Teacher's Note:
1. The idea of large size links planning to price-fixing.
2. Add the consequence for full marks.

Q13. What is the writer's primary objective in writing this passage? [1 mark]

View Answer & Explanation

Answer: The writer wants to show that price-fixing is normal and useful in industrialised economies. He also argues that free-market advocates overlook this fact.

Teacher's Note:
1. The tone is argumentative and corrective.
2. Identify both the claim and the target of the criticism.

Q14. Is there any indication about the free market? [1 mark]

View Answer & Explanation

Answer: There is no indication that countries which avoided the free market and used price-fixing suffered in economic development. So the free market is not shown to be peculiarly efficient.

Teacher's Note:
1. The last sentence of the passage is the clue.
2. Link it to the efficiency claim.

Q15. Fill in the blank: In our country most of the economists are ______. [1 mark]

Answer: captivated by the spell of the free market.

Teacher's Note:

Q16. Fill in the blank: The advocates of the free market believe ______. [1 mark]

View Answer & Explanation

Teacher's Note:
1. The belief is stated in the second paragraph.
2. Begin the answer with 'that'.

Q17. Fill in the blank: Most economists do not see ______. [1 mark]

View Answer & Explanation

2. It means causing harm in a gradual way.
