RRB Group D - The Biggest Railway Job in India for 10th Pass Candidates
RRB Group D typically releases over 1 lakh vacancies per recruitment cycle - making it the single largest government recruitment drive in India by number of posts. It is the primary entry point for 10th pass and ITI candidates into Indian Railways - the world's 4th largest rail network and one of India's biggest employers. Along with a stable government salary, Group D employees receive free railway passes, subsidised colony housing, free medical through railway hospitals, and a defined career progression path within Indian Railways.
📊 Computer Based Test (CBT) - Exam Pattern
The CBT is Stage 1 and determines shortlisting for PET. Your CBT score also forms the final merit list after PET qualification.

Mathematics252590 Min (Combined)
General Intelligence and Reasoning3030
General Science2525
General Awareness and Current Affairs2020
Total10010090 Min
⚠️ Important: RRB Group D has a unique structure - General Science is a separate subject (25 marks) distinct from General Awareness. This is different from SSC exams where Science is part of GK. Negative marking is 1/3 mark (0.33) per wrong answer. The CBT has no sectional time limit - all 100 questions share 90 minutes. Unlike RRB NTPC, there is only ONE CBT in Group D - it directly determines your merit rank after PET qualification.
💡 General Science is the key differentiator in Group D. With 25 dedicated questions on Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Class 10 level), General Science is the highest-weightage subject after Reasoning. Candidates who build a strong Class 10 Science foundation consistently rank higher than those who focus only on Math and Reasoning. NCERT Class 9 and 10 Science books cover 90% of what appears in Group D General Science.
🏃 Physical Efficiency Test (PET) - Stage 2
PET is qualifying only - marks are not counted in merit. Failing PET eliminates you regardless of your CBT score.
2
Physical Efficiency Test - Running Standards
CategoryEvent 1 - RunningTime LimitEvent 2 - Weight Lifting / Carrying
Male (All categories)1000 metres4 minutes 15 secondsLift and carry 35 kg weight for 100 metres in 2 minutes
Female (All categories)1000 metres5 minutes 40 secondsLift and carry 20 kg weight for 100 metres in 2 minutes
Key difference from SSC GD and SSC CPO PET: RRB Group D PET includes a weight lifting and carrying event in addition to the running event. The weight lifting component tests practical physical strength relevant to the track maintenance and helper roles in railways. Both events must be cleared - failing either the run or the weight carry disqualifies the candidate.
⚠️ No relaxation in PET for reserved categories. Unlike age limit where SC/ST/OBC get relaxation, the PET standards are the same for all categories within each gender. All male candidates must run 1000m in 4:15 and carry 35 kg for 100m regardless of caste category.
🏥 Medical Examination Standards
Stage 3 - Medical examination is conducted after PET. Standards vary by post type within Group D.
👁️ Eyesight Standards
  • Distant Vision: 6/9 in both eyes (with or without glasses for non-safety posts)
  • For safety category posts (Track Maintainer, Pointsman, Gateman): stricter vision - 6/9 without glasses in one eye and 6/12 in other
  • Colour Vision: Must be normal for safety-related posts
  • Night blindness: Not permitted for track and safety posts
💪 Physical Fitness
  • No deformity of limbs affecting work performance
  • No varicose veins or flat feet for field posts
  • Good cardiovascular and respiratory health
  • No hernia, hydrocele, or chronic conditions affecting physical work
  • BMI within normal range as per railway norms
🩺 Medical Categories
  • A1 / A2 / A3: Safety category posts - strictest standards (Pointsman, Gateman, Track Maintainer)
  • B1 / B2: Non-safety category posts - less strict (Hospital Attendant, Helper in offices)
  • Always check the medical category of your preferred post in the notification
  • Candidates can request a Review Medical Board if they fail the initial examination
⚠️ Key Points
  • Hearing must be normal in both ears for safety-related posts
  • No history of epilepsy or fainting spells
  • Good mental health - no psychiatric history
  • Get a pre-application medical check to identify any potential disqualifying conditions
  • Colour blindness disqualifies for all safety category posts
💼 Group D Posts, Departments and Salary
All Group D posts are at Pay Level 1 (Rs.18,000 Basic Pay). The difference lies in the department, work profile, and posting conditions.

Group D Salary and Railway Benefits
All Group D posts carry Pay Level 1 (Rs.18,000 Basic Pay). Gross salary including DA (46%), HRA, and transport allowance is approximately Rs.26,000 - Rs.32,000+ per month depending on posting city. Beyond salary - free railway travel passes for self and family (value Rs.50,000+ per year), subsidised colony housing, free medical at railway hospitals, access to railway schools for children, and railway canteen at subsidised rates make the total compensation package significantly higher than the gross salary alone.

🎯 Our Recommendation: If you have only cleared 10th, RRB Group D is your best railway option - the largest vacancy count in any government exam and a direct path into Indian Railways. If you have cleared 12th or have a graduation degree, target RRB NTPC instead - the pay is significantly higher and the work profile is better. Graduates who apply for Group D should use it only as a backup while primarily targeting NTPC. After joining Group D, employees can appear for NTPC through internal promotions or external competitive exams.

ℹ️ Female cut-offs are consistently 10-15 marks lower than male cut-offs. Cut-offs vary by RRB region and post type within Group D. Data is indicative - always refer to official RRB score cards for exact figures. Target 80+ out of 100 in CBT for a comfortable margin in General category (Male).
💡 Expert Tips - Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
From our faculty who have trained thousands of RRB Group D successful candidates
1
General Science is the most underrated subject in Group D - treat it as a priority - Most Group D aspirants spend 70% of their time on Reasoning and Math and leave General Science for last. This is a strategic mistake. General Science has 25 dedicated questions - equal to Math - yet most candidates score only 12-15 here due to poor preparation. Candidates who read NCERT Class 9 and 10 Science books thoroughly consistently score 20-22 out of 25 in this section. Biology chapters on Life Processes, Human Body Systems, and Reproduction have the highest question frequency. 3-4 dedicated weeks on NCERT Science can add 8-10 marks to your total score.
2
Start PET physical training simultaneously with CBT preparation - do not wait for CBT result - The PET for Group D requires running 1000m in 4 minutes 15 seconds AND carrying 35 kg for 100 metres in 2 minutes. The weight carrying event is unique to Group D and requires specific physical conditioning - candidates who are fit for running but have not trained for weight carrying regularly fail this event. Build a daily routine from Day 1 - morning run (build up from 1 km to 3-4 km daily) and weight training (deadlifts, farmer carries) to develop the specific strength needed for the 35 kg carry. Physical fitness cannot be built in 2-3 weeks after CBT results.
3
Indian Railways GK is a guaranteed scoring area - build a dedicated fact sheet - RRB Group D has a stronger Railway-specific GK bias than even RRB NTPC. Questions about railway zones and their headquarters, zonal railway museums, types of gauges (Broad, Metre, Narrow), railway speed records, Vande Bharat Express routes and features, Dedicated Freight Corridor progress, and the 18 railway zones with their headquarters appear frequently. This content is not in standard GK books. Build a Railway GK fact sheet with all zones (headquarters, states covered), major railway projects, and recent railway news. 4-6 questions per exam come from Railway-specific GK alone.
4
Jumbling is a unique Reasoning topic in RRB exams - practise it specifically - Jumbling (rearrangement of words to form meaningful sentences, or rearrangement of numbers/letters based on rules) is a topic that appears in RRB exams but is absent in SSC exams. Candidates preparing from SSC materials often encounter Jumbling for the first time in the actual CBT and waste time on it. Practise 20-30 Jumbling questions from RRB-specific question banks to become familiar with the question types and solve them quickly. Once understood, Jumbling questions take only 30-40 seconds each to answer.
5
The 1/3 negative marking means you should attempt all questions you can narrow down - RRB Group D's 1/3 negative marking (0.33 per wrong answer) is more candidate-friendly than SSC's 0.25 or 0.50 for higher-stakes questions. For a 4-option MCQ, if you can eliminate even one clearly wrong option, attempting the question gives you a positive expected score. Never leave questions blank when you can eliminate at least one option. Only skip questions where all 4 options seem equally possible - in those cases, a blank is statistically better than a random guess.
6
Check the medical standard of your preferred post before applying - safety posts have strict vision requirements - Posts like Track Maintainer, Pointsman, and Gateman are safety-category posts requiring A2 or A3 medical standard - including strict colour vision and specific eyesight requirements without glasses. Candidates who wear glasses or have colour blindness cannot be selected for these posts. Before applying and selecting post preferences, get a full eye examination including colour vision test. If you have colour vision deficiency, do not waste a preference on safety-category posts - focus on non-safety posts like Helper in Electrical, Hospital Attendant, or Porter which have less restrictive B1 or C2 medical standards.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions - RRB Group D 2026
Most searched questions about RRB Group D answered by our experts
All RRB Group D posts are at Pay Level 1 with a Basic Pay of Rs.18,000 per month. The gross salary including DA (currently 46%), HRA (8% to 27% depending on city classification), and Transport Allowance is approximately Rs.26,000 - Rs.32,000+ per month depending on the posting location. Beyond the gross salary, Indian Railways employees receive a comprehensive benefits package - free railway travel passes for self and family (valued at Rs.50,000+ per year), subsidised colony housing (saving Rs.4,000-8,000/month in rent), free medical treatment at railway hospitals for self and dependents, access to railway schools for children at subsidised fees, and railway canteen access at subsidised rates. All Group D employees also receive pension under NPS and Central Government Group Insurance.
10th pass (Matriculation) alone is sufficient for most RRB Group D posts. The eligibility criteria specify that candidates must have passed 10th standard or equivalent from a recognised board OR possess a National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) OR hold an ITI certificate from a recognised institution. This is an OR condition - any one of these qualifications is sufficient. You do not need an ITI certificate if you have passed 10th. However, for some specific technical helper posts (Helper in Electrical, Mechanical, or Signal departments), an ITI in the relevant trade may be preferred or specifically required - always check the post-wise eligibility in the official notification before applying.
The key difference is the weight carrying event. SSC GD PET only requires a 5 km run (for male candidates). RRB Group D PET requires a 1000m run (much shorter) AND a weight carry event - lifting 35 kg and carrying it for 100 metres within 2 minutes for male candidates (20 kg for females). The weight carry event tests functional physical strength relevant to the track maintenance and field roles in railways. Many candidates who are fit for running but have never trained for weight carrying fail this event. The Group D PET running distance (1000m) is shorter and easier than SSC GD (5 km) - but the weight carry event is an additional challenge that SSC GD does not have. Both events must be cleared - failing either disqualifies the candidate.
Yes - Group D employees have two promotion pathways to NTPC-level posts. First, through internal departmental promotion - after completing the required years of service and passing internal departmental promotion exams, Group D employees can be promoted to Level 2 posts (equivalent to NTPC undergraduate level posts like Junior Clerk or Trains Clerk). Second, Group D employees who have cleared 12th or have a degree can simultaneously appear in external competitive exams like RRB NTPC or SSC exams while in service - many current NTPC-level railway employees started as Group D workers. Working inside Indian Railways gives you direct exposure to the railway system which aids immensely in preparing for Railway GK questions in future exams.
RRB Group D has no official attempt limit. You can appear in every recruitment cycle as long as you are within the age limit of 18-33 years for General category (up to 36 years for OBC, up to 38 years for SC/ST). RRB Group D notifications do not come every year - cycles are typically released once in 2-4 years based on vacancy accumulation. The most recent major cycle was 2019 (result 2022) which recruited over 1 lakh candidates. When a notification is released, the number of vacancies is very large, making it one of the highest-opportunity government exams available. Never miss applying when a notification is released.
All Group D posts are at the same Pay Level 1 (Rs.18,000 Basic Pay) - so salary is not a differentiating factor. The choice depends on your interests, medical fitness, and work preference. Track Maintainer is the most common post with the highest vacancies - outdoor field work on railway tracks, physically demanding, requires A2/A3 medical standard (strict colour vision). Helper in Electrical/Mechanical - workshop and depot-based maintenance work, less outdoor exposure, B1 medical standard (less strict). Hospital Attendant - indoor hospital work, patient care, lightest physical demands, C2 medical standard (most lenient). Pointsman - safety-critical track switching at yards, A3 medical standard, shift work. Choose based on which medical standard you meet, whether you prefer outdoor or indoor work, and which department interests you.
The written CBT for RRB Group D and SSC MTS are broadly similar in difficulty - both are Class 10 level. Key differences: Group D CBT has General Science as a dedicated 25-mark subject (not in SSC MTS); Group D uses 1/3 negative marking vs SSC MTS Session 2 which uses 1-mark negative marking (Group D is more lenient); Group D has 100 questions in 90 minutes while SSC MTS has 90 questions across 2 sessions. The biggest difference is that Group D has a mandatory Physical Efficiency Test (PET) while SSC MTS has no physical test at all - making Group D harder overall as a selection process. In terms of competition, Group D attracts significantly more applications per vacancy than SSC MTS due to the sheer popularity of railway jobs. Candidates who are preparing for both should treat the CBT preparation as largely identical and add physical training specifically for Group D PET.
