RPF - Armed Force Status Within Indian Railways
RPF (Railway Protection Force) is a Central Armed Police Force under the Ministry of Railways with statutory powers to arrest, investigate, and prosecute offenders. Unlike RRB Group D or NTPC employees who are civilian railway staff, RPF personnel are armed force members with police powers. This gives RPF unique perks - Uniform Allowance, Kit Maintenance Allowance, Ration Money Allowance, and Risk and Hardship Allowances on top of regular salary - plus full railway benefits including free travel passes, housing, and medical. SI in RPF is equivalent in pay and status to SI in CISF or BSF under SSC CPO.
📊 RPF Constable - CBT Exam Pattern

⚠️ Important: General Awareness carries the highest question count (50 out of 120) in RPF Constable CBT - more than Arithmetic and Reasoning combined. Negative marking is 1/3 mark per wrong answer. CBT merit determines final selection after PET and PST qualification - unlike RRB NTPC or ALP, there is only ONE CBT and it directly counts in merit.
⭐ RPF Sub-Inspector - CBT Exam Pattern
SI CBT has the same structure as Constable CBT but at a higher difficulty level. General Awareness still carries the highest weightage.

✅ Same structure, higher difficulty. The SI CBT has exactly the same section names and question counts as the Constable CBT - but the questions are at a graduate level of difficulty. Arithmetic questions include advanced topics like Algebra, Trigonometry, and Data Interpretation for SI. GK questions are deeper and more analytical. Reasoning puzzles are more complex. The merit list for SI and Constable are prepared separately.
💡 Key difference between Constable and SI CBT: For Constable, Arithmetic is at Class 10 level (basic arithmetic only). For SI, Arithmetic includes graduate-level topics (Algebra, Mensuration, Trigonometry, DI). Candidates targeting SI should prepare Math at the same level as SSC CPO or SSC CGL Tier 1.
🏃 Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and Physical Standard Test (PST)
Both Constable and SI must clear PET and PST. Standards differ slightly between posts. Failing PET or PST eliminates you regardless of CBT score.

⚠️ RPF PET includes Long Jump and High Jump - unlike SSC GD and RRB Group D which only test running. These field events require technique training alongside fitness. RPF height standards (165 cm for General male) are slightly lower than SSC CPO (170 cm) - making RPF more accessible to candidates who are just below the CPO threshold.
🏥 Medical Examination Standards
Medical examination is conducted after PET and PST. RPF as an armed police force has strict medical standards.
👁️ Eyesight Standards
Distant Vision: 6/12 in both eyes (with or without glasses)
Near Vision: N6 in both eyes
Colour Vision: Must be able to distinguish red and green
No squint or night blindness
Spectacles permitted if within prescribed limits
💪 Physical Fitness
No deformity of limbs affecting duty performance
No flat foot or knocked knees
Good cardiovascular health
No varicose veins
No hernia, hydrocele, or piles
Weight proportionate to height as per BMI norms
👂 Hearing and Speech
Normal hearing in both ears
No use of hearing aids
No stammer or speech impediment
Good mental health - no psychiatric history
No history of epilepsy or blackouts
⚠️ Note on Spectacles
RPF is more lenient on eyesight than SSC CPO or SSC GD - spectacles are permitted if within the prescribed distant vision limit of 6/12. This means candidates with mild myopia or hypermetropia who use glasses can still qualify for RPF, unlike other police force exams where uncorrected vision is mandatory. Always verify the latest notification for exact vision parameters before applying.

📚 RPF Syllabus - Chapter-wise Topics
General Awareness carries 50 out of 120 marks - the highest weightage subject. Railway-specific GK is uniquely important for RPF.
🌍
General Awareness and Current Affairs
🔥 50 Questions - 50 Marks - Highest Weightage
Railway and RPF Focus (Unique to this Exam)
Indian Railways - Zones, Headquarters, Speed records, New projects
RPF History and Functions - Statutory powers, RPSF, key Acts
Railway Acts - Railways Act 1989, RPF Act 1957
Railway Safety - Signal systems, level crossing rules

General Science - Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Class 10 level)
Current Affairs - Last 6-9 months (National and International)
Awards, Sports, Important Appointments
Government Schemes - especially those related to railways and security
💡 Pro Tip: RPF GK is uniquely heavy on Railway Acts, RPF statutory powers, and RPSF (Railway Protection Special Force) - these topics are not in any other GK preparation. Build a dedicated RPF legal framework and railway security fact sheet. Also know the difference between RPF (security) and RPSF (special commando wing).
🔢
Arithmetic (Numerical Ability)
35 Questions - 35 Marks
Constable Level (Class 10 Arithmetic)
Number System, HCF and LCM, BODMAS
Percentage, Profit and Loss

💡 Pro Tip: Constable Reasoning is at SSC GD / SSC MTS level - basic Analogy, Series, and Non-verbal. SI Reasoning is at SSC CPO level - includes Puzzles and Seating Arrangement. Analogy and Non-verbal topics are the fastest-scoring regardless of post level.
⚖️ RPF vs RPSF vs SSC CPO - Key Differences
Candidates often confuse RPF, RPSF, and SSC CPO. Here is a clear comparison of all three.

RPF Constables seeking elite commando role within railway force
Graduates targeting CAPF officer career in BSF, CISF, CRPF, ITBP, SSB
🎯 Our Recommendation: RPF is unique because it combines the benefits of both a police force (armed status, police powers, risk allowances) and Indian Railways employment (free passes, housing, medical). For 10th pass candidates, RPF Constable is superior to SSC GD Constable because the pay is Level 3 (vs Level 3 for SSC GD) but with the additional railway benefits. For graduates, RPF SI and SSC CPO SI are at the same pay level - but RPF additionally gives railway perks that SSC CPO does not. Graduates should apply for both when notifications are released simultaneously.

ℹ️ Female cut-offs are consistently 12-15 marks lower than male cut-offs. SI cut-offs are consistently 5-8 marks higher than Constable cut-offs for the same category. Data is indicative - always refer to official RRB score cards for exact figures. Target 85+ for Constable General Male and 90+ for SI General Male for a safe margin.
💡 Expert Tips - Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
From our faculty who have trained thousands of RPF Constable and SI successful candidates
1
General Awareness carries 50 out of 120 marks - it is the make-or-break subject - RPF CBT gives GK the highest weightage (50 marks vs 35 each for Arithmetic and Reasoning). Yet most candidates spend 60-70% of their time on Arithmetic and Reasoning out of habit from other exams. This is the biggest strategic mistake in RPF preparation. A candidate who scores 45 out of 50 in GK while scoring 25 out of 35 in Arithmetic will rank significantly higher than one who scores 35 out of 50 in GK and 32 out of 35 in Arithmetic. Invest at least 40% of total study time in GK preparation throughout the entire preparation period.
2
RPF and Railway Acts are unique high-value GK topics - most candidates skip them - The Railways Act 1989, RPF Act 1957, and the specific powers granted to RPF personnel under these acts appear in almost every RPF exam GK section. Questions like "Under which section of the Railways Act can an RPF officer arrest without warrant?" or "What is the maximum imprisonment under the RPF Act for assaulting an RPF officer?" are common. Standard GK books do not cover these at all. Build a dedicated RPF legal framework fact sheet covering the key provisions of both Acts, the distinction between RPF and RPSF, and the hierarchy of the RPF force. This topic alone can add 5-7 marks to your GK score.
3
Practise Long Jump and High Jump specifically - PET failure is the most common elimination stage - RPF PET requires both running and field events (Long Jump and High Jump). Most candidates train only for running and are caught unprepared by the jump events. The Long Jump (12 feet for Constable male, 14 feet for SI male) and High Jump (3 feet 9 inches for Constable male, 4 feet for SI male) require specific technique - particularly the approach run, takeoff point, and landing for Long Jump. Start field event training at least 10-12 weeks before the PET date. Do not assume that being physically fit for running automatically means you can clear the jump events without practice.
4
Spectacles are permitted in RPF medical - check your eligibility before applying - Unlike SSC CPO, SSC GD, and most other police force exams which require uncorrected 6/6 vision, RPF allows spectacles if the corrected vision meets 6/12 in both eyes. This means candidates with mild to moderate myopia who wear glasses can qualify for RPF even if they would be disqualified from SSC CPO or SSC GD on eyesight grounds. Many eligible candidates are unaware of this and assume they cannot apply for any police force exam due to their glasses. Get a proper eye examination and verify whether your corrected vision meets the RPF 6/12 standard before assuming ineligibility.
5
Apply for both Constable and SI if you are a graduate - the GK preparation is identical - The GK, Arithmetic, and Reasoning for RPF Constable and SI use the same topics but at different difficulty levels for Arithmetic and Reasoning. The GK preparation is virtually identical for both posts. If you are a graduate, always apply for both Constable and SI in the same notification. The SI post pays Rs.35,400 Basic Pay (Level 6) vs Rs.21,700 for Constable (Level 3) - a difference of Rs.13,700/month in basic pay. The additional preparation for SI over Constable is mainly harder Arithmetic (graduate-level Math) and more complex Reasoning puzzles. Never limit yourself to Constable alone if you have a graduation degree.
6
RPF CBT merit directly determines selection - unlike RRB NTPC or ALP, there is no second CBT - In RRB NTPC, CBT 1 is qualifying and CBT 2 is merit-based. In RRB ALP, CBT 1 is qualifying and CBT 2 Part A is merit-based. In RPF, there is only ONE CBT and that single score directly determines your merit rank (after PET and PST qualification). This means every mark in the RPF CBT is final and decisive. There is no second chance to improve your score. Many candidates who prepare for RPF with a "clear CBT 1 first, focus on merit later" mindset (borrowed from NTPC preparation strategy) find themselves at a disadvantage because they do not treat the single RPF CBT with sufficient seriousness from the start.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions - RPF 2026
Most searched questions about RPF Constable and SI answered by our experts
RPF Constable joins at Pay Level 3 with a Basic Pay of Rs.21,700 per month. RPF Sub-Inspector joins at Pay Level 6 with a Basic Pay of Rs.35,400 per month. Gross salary for Constable is approximately Rs.32,000-38,000 per month and for SI approximately Rs.55,000-65,000 per month - including DA, HRA, Transport Allowance, and RPF-specific allowances (Uniform Allowance, Ration Money, Risk Allowance). On top of this, all RPF personnel receive the complete Indian Railways benefits package - free railway travel passes for self and family, subsidised colony housing, free medical at railway hospitals, railway school access for children, and NPS pension - making the effective total compensation significantly higher than gross salary alone.
RPF (Railway Protection Force) is the main uniformed security wing of Indian Railways, responsible for protecting railway property, preventing theft of railway goods, protecting passengers from criminal elements, and enforcing railway laws. RPF has police powers under the Railways Act including the power to arrest and prosecute. RPSF (Railway Protection Special Force) is an elite commando and specialised operations unit within the RPF structure. RPSF handles VIP protection on trains, anti-sabotage operations, riot control, and other high-risk situations requiring paramilitary-level response. You cannot directly apply for RPSF - candidates are recruited as RPF Constables and then selected for RPSF through an internal selection process based on fitness, skills, and performance. RPSF personnel receive additional allowances for the higher-risk duties.
No - RPF Sub-Inspector requires graduation (any stream) from a recognised university. 10th pass candidates can apply only for RPF Constable. However, once a 10th pass candidate joins as RPF Constable, they can appear for internal promotion examinations and eventually reach the SI rank through the promotion ladder (Constable - Head Constable - ASI - SI). This promotion path typically takes 10-15 years of service. If you have a graduation degree, always apply directly for SI which offers Level 6 pay (Rs.35,400 Basic Pay) - significantly higher than the Level 3 (Rs.21,700) starting salary of Constable.
RPF Constable and SSC GD Constable are both at Pay Level 3 (Rs.21,700 Basic Pay) - the same basic pay. The key differences are: RPF Constable receives full Indian Railways employee benefits (free travel passes, railway housing, railway medical) which SSC GD Constable in CAPFs does not - this alone adds significant non-cash value. RPF is posted exclusively in railway zones and stations (urban and semi-urban) while SSC GD can post candidates in remote border areas (BSF, ITBP, SSB) or field operations (CRPF). RPF PET includes Long Jump and High Jump in addition to running, while SSC GD PET only has running. For candidates who value railway perks and urban posting, RPF Constable is preferable. For candidates who want a CAPF career with force-specific allowances (border allowance, risk allowance for field operations), SSC GD may suit better.
RPF has no official attempt limit. You can appear in every recruitment cycle as long as you are within the age limit - 18-28 years for Constable and 20-28 years for SI in General category (OBC gets 3 years relaxation, SC/ST gets 5 years). The age window is relatively narrow - particularly for SI where a graduate may have only 4-6 years of eligibility after completing their degree. RPF notifications are not released every year - the most recent major recruitment was 2024 (Constable and SI combined). Never miss applying when a notification is released, especially given the narrow age window for SI. Start preparing as soon as you have cleared 10th (for Constable) or graduation (for SI).
Yes - both RPF Constable and SI are open to female candidates. Female candidates have separate PET standards - 800m run (not 1600m), Long Jump 9 feet (not 12/14 feet), High Jump 3 feet (not 3 feet 9 inches / 4 feet). Height requirement for female General/OBC/SC candidates is 157 cm. Female cut-offs in CBT are consistently 12-15 marks lower than male cut-offs for the same category. RPF actively recruits female candidates as part of its diversity commitment - female RPF personnel are deployed in roles involving passenger assistance, checking of female passengers, and railway station security. A percentage of vacancies in each notification are specifically earmarked for female candidates. Check each official notification for exact female vacancy count and post-wise distribution.
Yes - RPF personnel have statutory police powers under the Railways Act 1989 and the RPF Act 1957. RPF officers can arrest persons without warrant for offences specified under the Railways Act - including theft of railway property, unauthorized entry into railway premises, causing damage to railway property, and other specific offences enumerated in the Act. They can also search persons and seize stolen property. However, RPF jurisdiction is limited to railway property and railway-related offences - they do not have the broad policing powers of regular state police. For serious offences (like murder on a train), RPF has first response duties but hands over the investigation to the Government Railway Police (GRP) which is a state police force. This distinction between RPF (central, railway-specific) and GRP (state police) is an important legal GK point often tested in RPF exams.

RPF Constable and SI 2026 - Complete Guide: Eligibility, CBT Pattern, PET and PST Standards, Syllabus and Free Mock Tests
The RPF (Railway Protection Force) exam 2026 is conducted by Railway Recruitment Boards to recruit Constables (10th pass, Pay Level 3, Rs.21,700 Basic Pay) and Sub-Inspectors (Graduate, Pay Level 6, Rs.35,400 Basic Pay) in the Railway Protection Force - the armed uniformed security wing of Indian Railways with statutory police powers under the Railways Act 1989. With 9,000+ vacancies across both posts, RPF is unique in combining armed force status and police powers with the complete Indian Railways employee benefits package - free railway travel passes, subsidised housing, free medical, and NPS pension. RPF is one of the only central government security force exams where candidates receive both CAPF-style allowances (Uniform, Ration Money, Risk) and railway-specific perks simultaneously.
The RPF selection process has 3 stages: CBT (Computer Based Test - 120 questions, 120 marks, 90 minutes - covering General Awareness and Current Affairs 50 marks, Arithmetic 35 marks, and General Intelligence and Reasoning 35 marks - with 1/3 negative marking), Physical Efficiency Test (PET - 1600m run + Long Jump + High Jump for male, 800m run + Long Jump + High Jump for female), and Physical Standard Test (PST - height 165 cm General male, 157 cm General female). The CBT merit score directly determines final selection after PET and PST qualification - unlike RRB NTPC or ALP, there is only ONE CBT with no qualifying-only round. SI CBT is at graduate level difficulty; Constable CBT is at Class 10 level.
Our free RPF mock tests cover all 4 subject areas - General Intelligence and Reasoning (Analogy, Classification, Series, Non-verbal Reasoning, Puzzles), General Knowledge and Awareness (Static GK, Indian Railways GK, RPF and Railways Acts, Current Affairs), Numerical and Mathematical Ability (Arithmetic for Constable level, graduate-level Math for SI including Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry), and General Studies (History, Geography, Polity, Economics, Science chapter-wise) - with chapter-wise tests and full-length CBT timed mock tests with 1/3 negative marking simulation - at zero cost, with no login required.
