Agnipath Scheme - A New Entry Route into India's Armed Forces
The Agnipath scheme, launched in June 2022, replaces the previous direct enlistment process for soldiers, sailors, and airmen. Agniveers serve for 4 years with full military training, operational deployment, and service benefits. At the end of 4 years, 25% are retained as Permanent Cadre (regular soldiers). The remaining 75% exit with the tax-free Seva Nidhi corpus of Rs.11.71 lakh, a certificate, and priority in Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), state police, and other government jobs as announced by various state governments.

🚀 After 4 Years - Career Options for Agniveers
The 75% who exit after 4 years have multiple priority pathways announced by central and state governments.
🛡️ Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs)
The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced 10% reservation in CAPF recruitment for Agniveer veterans. CAPFs include BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB, and AR. Agniveers also get relaxation in age limit and physical standards for CAPF recruitment - making this the most direct civilian government career pathway after Agniveer service.
🏛️ State Government Jobs
Multiple state governments have announced priority or reservation for Agniveer veterans in state police recruitment and other state government jobs. States including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, and others have specific policies. Check the latest announcements from your home state government for applicable benefits.
🏦 Banking and PSU Jobs
Several public sector banks and PSUs have announced priority consideration for Agniveer veterans in recruitment. The structured discipline, teamwork, and skill training during Agniveer service is recognised as valuable experience by many employers. The Seva Nidhi corpus of Rs.11.71 lakh also provides seed capital for entrepreneurship.
🎓 Higher Education and Skills
Agniveers who joined after 10th receive a Class 12 equivalent certificate on exit - opening higher education pathways. The Ministry of Education has provisions for Agniveer veterans to pursue degree programmes. NSDC (National Skill Development Corporation) has tie-ups for skill certification that enhances employability in civilian sectors including security, logistics, and technical industries.
⭐ 25% Permanent Retention
The top 25% Agniveers based on performance during the 4-year tenure are retained as regular soldiers, sailors, or airmen with full pension benefits, standard service career, and promotion opportunities. This is the most desirable outcome - giving a full military career. Perform consistently well during your tenure and aim to be in the top quartile of your batch.
💼 Private Sector and Entrepreneurship
Agniveer service develops highly marketable skills - leadership, discipline, physical fitness, technical trade skills (for technical trades), and teamwork. Private security agencies, logistics companies, defence contractors, and corporates recognise Agniveer experience. The Rs.11.71 lakh Seva Nidhi also provides capital to start small businesses with MUDRA loan support available for veterans.

💡 Expert Tips - Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
From our faculty who have trained thousands of Agniveer successful candidates
1
Apply for all three services simultaneously - preparation overlaps heavily - Army, Navy, and Air Force Agniveer exams test broadly similar subjects - GK, Math, General Science, and English - at Class 10-12 level. The core preparation for all three is largely common. A candidate targeting Army GD, Navy SSR, and Air Force Y Group simultaneously is only doing one preparation with minor adjustments for each service's specific subjects. Never limit yourself to one service when the written exam preparation is 70-80% shared. The physical standards differ by service - start physical training for the most demanding standard (Air Force 1.6 km in 6:30) and you automatically meet the Army and Navy standards.
2
Military and defence GK is unique to Agniveer - standard GK books miss it entirely - Agniveer written exams across all three services have a uniquely strong military GK bias. Questions about Indian Army regiments and their battle honours, Indian Navy ships and their commissioning, IAF aircraft and their roles, Param Vir Chakra recipients and their operations, military exercises with other countries, DRDO projects and indigenisation milestones, and border infrastructure projects appear in every Agniveer exam. Standard GK preparation material designed for SSC or banking exams covers only 40-50% of Agniveer GK. Build a dedicated armed forces fact sheet using service recruitment websites, official PIB releases, and Ministry of Defence news.
3
Physical fitness preparation must start 3-4 months before the rally or Phase 2 date - The written exam for Agniveer is relatively straightforward - but the physical fitness test eliminates a significant proportion of written-qualified candidates who have not trained consistently. Army PFT requires 1.6 km in under 5:30 and 10 pull-ups. Air Force requires 1.6 km in under 6:30. These standards require dedicated cardio and strength training built over weeks - you cannot build running endurance and upper body strength in 2-3 weeks before the test. Start a structured fitness programme from the day you decide to target Agniveer - minimum 3-4 months of daily training. Combine running (build to 5 km daily) with pull-up training and core exercises.
4
Army Clerk English carries 50% of total marks - it is the entire exam for this trade - For candidates targeting Army Agniveer Clerk, English carries 25 out of 50 marks - half the entire exam. A candidate who scores 23/25 in English but only 15/25 in the remaining subjects will outscore a candidate who scores 20/25 in the other subjects and only 15/25 in English. Clerk also has the highest eligibility requirement (60% aggregate in Class 12 with 50% in each subject). If you are targeting Clerk, treat English as your primary subject - Reading Comprehension, Grammar (Active/Passive, Direct/Indirect), and Vocabulary must be mastered, not just briefly revised.
5
Sectional minimums in Air Force can eliminate high scorers - prepare all sections equally - Air Force Agniveer Vayu written exam has a minimum qualifying mark of 25% in each subject and 40% overall. A candidate who scores 50/70 overall but only 5/25 in Physics (20% - below the 25% sectional minimum) is disqualified even though their overall score is above cut-off. This sectional minimum is a trap for candidates who skip weak subjects and focus only on their strengths. In the X Group exam, Physics, Mathematics, and English must all be above the 25% sectional minimum. Never leave any section unprepared - 7 out of 25 marks (28%) in Physics is the minimum to stay in the race.
6
Aim to be in the top 25% during service - this determines permanent retention - The Agnipath scheme's most significant benefit - permanent military career - goes to the top 25% of Agniveers based on their performance during the 4-year service. This assessment is based on annual confidential reports, physical fitness tests conducted during service, technical proficiency, discipline record, and senior officers' assessment. Many candidates prepare intensely for the entry exam but do not think about what happens during service. From Day 1 of training, aim to be in the top quartile of your batch - excellent physical fitness, strong technical trade performance, discipline, and leadership attitude during service are the criteria for retention. Treat the 4-year tenure as an extended performance evaluation, not just a job.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions - Agniveer 2026
Most searched questions about the Agnipath scheme and Agniveer recruitment answered by our experts
The Seva Nidhi is a financial corpus accumulated over the 4-year Agniveer tenure through equal monthly contributions from the Agniveer and the Government of India. Each month, 30% of the customised monthly package is deducted as the Agniveer's contribution to the Seva Nidhi Fund, and the government contributes an equivalent matching amount. At the end of 4 years, the combined corpus (Agniveer contribution + Government matching contribution + accumulated interest) amounts to approximately Rs.11.71 lakh which is paid as a tax-free lump sum to the Agniveer on exit. In case of death or disability during service, the full Seva Nidhi is paid immediately along with other compensation. The 25% who are retained as permanent cadre also receive their accumulated Seva Nidhi contribution, which transitions into a pension-linked savings scheme.
The Agnipath scheme fundamentally changed the enlistment model for soldiers, sailors, and airmen. Under the previous system, enlistment was for a full career of 15-17 years minimum with pension benefits at retirement. Under Agnipath, the initial tenure is fixed at 4 years. After 4 years, 25% are retained permanently while 75% exit with the Seva Nidhi corpus. Key differences: Previous system gave pension after full service; Agnipath gives Seva Nidhi corpus to all and pension only to the 25% retained. Previous system had no fixed exit; Agnipath has a structured 4-year tenure. Agniveers receive the same training, deployment in operational areas, and same risk as regular soldiers but with a different service structure. The scheme aims to create a younger, fitter armed forces profile while providing trained manpower to the civilian economy after service.
Yes - Agniveer veterans who meet the educational and age eligibility can appear for officer entry exams after their service. For example, an Agniveer who joined after 12th and completes graduation during or after service can appear for CDS or AFCAT. Age relaxations for Agniveer veterans in officer entry exams have been announced - check the latest official notifications for the exact relaxation applicable. Within the armed forces, the 25% who are retained as permanent cadre can also appear for internal promotion exams to rise from soldier to officer (Havildar to Lieutenant pathway). Agniveer service provides strong physical preparation, military familiarity, and discipline that significantly benefits candidates in the SSB Interview for officer entry.
The right service depends on your educational background, interests, and physical profile. If you have cleared 10th and want the earliest possible entry - Army GD (10th pass) or Navy MR (10th pass for Chef, Hygienist, Steward) are the most accessible. If you have cleared 12th with Physics and Math - Navy SSR and Air Force X Group offer technical trades with higher skill development. If you have cleared 12th in any stream - Air Force Y Group (Admin, Logistics, Security) or Army Clerk are good options. Air Force Agniveer Vayu has the highest written exam standard and fastest PFT (1.6 km in 6:30). Navy has the unique advantage of maritime exposure and potentially overseas deployments. Army has the largest vacancy pool and most diverse trade options. Our recommendation: apply for all services you are eligible for - appear in all exams and let the result decide.
Yes - Agniveers are trained and deployed in the same operational areas as regular soldiers, sailors, and airmen. This includes border areas (Line of Actual Control with China, Line of Control with Pakistan), counter-insurgency operations, high-altitude postings (Siachen, Ladakh), naval deployments at sea, and air base operations. The training and operational deployment of Agniveers is identical to regular enlisted personnel - there is no separate "safe" posting for Agniveers. Agniveers receive the same risk allowances as regular forces when deployed in field areas, counter-insurgency areas, and high-altitude postings. In case of death or disability in action, Agniveers and their families receive compensation packages including full Seva Nidhi, ex-gratia payment, and other benefits announced by the respective services.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced that 10% of vacancies in all CAPF (Central Armed Police Forces) recruitment will be reserved for Agniveer veterans after they complete their 4-year service. This applies to BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB, Assam Rifles, and NSG recruitment at constable and sub-inspector levels. Additionally, Agniveer veterans receive relaxation in age limit (typically 5 years above the standard upper limit) and relaxation in physical standards for CAPF recruitment. This means an Agniveer who exits after 4 years and applies for CAPF will compete in a less crowded reserved category with additional physical relaxation. Given that CAPFs collectively recruit tens of thousands of candidates annually, this 10% reservation represents a significant and reliable post-Agniveer career pathway for the 75% who exit.
