Summary of the Lesson

This chapter is about a child named Amal, who cannot go out because he is not well. His uncle, Madhab Datta, takes care of him. Amal spends most of his time in his uncle's courtyard, where he talks to people passing by. Those who know about Amal's illness spend time with him and give him small gifts. When children see Amal's uncle, they run away.

Amal asks his uncle if he can spend more time near the window, but his uncle says no. This is because many people come to talk to Amal, which slows down his healing. Amal then tells his uncle about a holy man he wants to meet and talk to. His uncle asks about this holy man. Amal explains that his holy man visits every day and tells him stories about faraway places. A person named Thakurda, dressed as a holy man, enters at that moment. Amal gets very excited to see him.

Thakurda winks at Madhab Datta to keep their secret. Amal asks the holy man where he went this time. He replies, "Curlew Island." Amal claps his hands and reminds the holy man that he promised to take him along next time he is healthy. The holy man agrees and says he will teach Amal spells that will let him travel anywhere. Madhab Datta interrupts them, telling them to stop their silly talk.

Amal eagerly asks about Curlew Island. Thakurda, the holy man, tells him it's an amazing island full of birds, with no people, by the sea. Beautiful mountains and sky make the place even prettier. A stream flows like sparkling diamonds. Amal wishes he could be a bird there. Then the holy man says Amal would have trouble if he became a curd seller when he grew up because no birds would buy his curd, and he would face losses. Madhab Dutta again stops their "nonsense" talk. Amal asks his uncle if the curd seller has come and gone. Madhab Datta says the curd seller left a pot of curd for Amal and went to his village Kalmipara to hire a flute player for his niece's wedding.

Amal imagines he will receive a letter from the King inviting him to be a postman. The village headman makes fun of him, saying the Royal Doctor will come to see him. Towards the end of the play, a doctor actually comes to visit him.

ठाकुरदा माधव दत्ता को अपनी बात गुप्त रखने के लिए आँख मारता है। अमल महात्मा से पूछता है कि वह इस बार कहाँ गए थे। वह जवाब देते हैं कि "करल्यू द्वीप"। अमल ताली बजाने लगता है और महात्मा को याद दिलाता है कि उन्होंने वादा किया था कि जब वह पूरी तरह से ठीक हो जाएगा तो उसे अपने साथ ले जाएंगे। महात्मा सहमत होते हैं और कहते हैं कि वह अमल को ऐसे मंत्र सिखाएंगे जिनसे वह दुनिया में कहीं भी यात्रा कर पाएगा। माधव दत्ता बीच में टोक कर उन्हें अपनी बकवास रोकने को कहते हैं।

अमल फिर उत्सुकता से करल्यू द्वीप के बारे में पूछता है। ठाकुरदा, महात्मा, उसे बताते हैं कि वह एक अद्भुत पक्षियों का द्वीप है, जहां कोई इंसान नहीं रहता, समुद्र के किनारे सुंदर पहाड़ और आसमान उसकी सुंदरता को बढ़ाते हैं। एक धारा पिघले हीरों की तरह बहती है। तब अमल सोचता है कि काश वह एक पक्षी होता। तब महात्मा कहते हैं कि अगर वह बड़ा होकर दही बेचने वाला बनेगा तो उसे बहुत परेशानी होगी क्योंकि कोई भी पक्षी उससे दही नहीं खरीदेगा और उसे नुकसान होगा। माधव दत्ता फिर से टोक कर उन्हें बकवास रोकने को कहते हैं।
