Q1) Why do places near the Equator receive more heat than those near the poles ?
Answer : The rays of the Sun fall on the surface of the Earth . Near the Equator , these rays are vertical and are spread over a small area. As we move away from the Equator and towards the poles , the rays become slanting and cover a large area . Thus the places near the Equator receive more heat and places near the e poles receive less heat .

Answer : a) Weather and Climate Weather –
i ) Weather is defined as the condition of air temperature , air pressure ,wind , humidity and rainfall in the atmosphere at a given place and time .
ii) Weather changes everyday .
Climate – i) The weather conditions that prevail over a large area and for a long period of time is called Climate .
ii) The Climate of a place remains more or less the same , year after year .
b) Moderate Climate and Extreme Climate –
Moderate Climate i) Places near the coast have a moderate Climate. lt is neither too hot nor too cold , this is due to the effect of sea breezes .
ii) For Ex – Chennai , which is near the coast have a moderate Climate.
Extreme Climate i) Places far away from the sea do not get sea breezes .So they are extremely hot in summer and very cold in winter . Such a climate is called Extreme Climate .
ii) For Ex – Delhi, which is away from the sea coast have an Extreme Climate .
Q3) Why do Chennai have a moderate Climate. ?
Answer : Places near the coast have a moderate Climate. lt is neither too hot nor too cold , this is due to the effect of sea breezes . Chennai is located along the coast and experiences a mild climate throughout the year .
Q4) How do winds influence the climate of a place ?
Answer : Winds blowing from hot regions increase the temperature of a place while those blowing from cold regions decrease the temperature . Winds blowing from the sea make the lands close to the sea cool and moist . Sometimes , winds bring clouds with them and cause rainfall .
Q5) Describe the climatic conditions of each heat zone .
Answer : The Earth is divided into three heat zones . The climatic conditions of each heat zone are as follows :--
i ) Torrid Zone - The climate is hot and humid throughout the year because direct rays of the Sun fall over it .
ii ) Temperate Zone - The climate is neither very hot nor very cold here as these zones are away from the Equator and also from the Poles .
iii ) Frizid Zone- This zone receives slanting rays of the Sun .lt remains very cold throughout the year.
