Chapter 2: Goal
Playing fields often witness pushing and shoving and quarrels. Such things are part of sports. In the days when we used to play, all this used to happen too. It was the year 1933. In those days, I used to play for the Punjab Regiment. One day there was a match between the 'Punjab Regiment' and the 'Sappers and Miners Team'. The players of the 'Miners Team' would try to snatch the ball from me, but every attempt of theirs would fail. In the meantime, one player, in anger, struck my head with a hockey stick. I was taken out of the field.
After a while, I came back to the field with a bandage tied around my head. As soon as I came, I put my hand on that player's back and said, "Don't worry, I will definitely take revenge for this." As soon as I said this, that player got scared. Now he would keep watching me all the time, wondering when I would strike his head with a hockey stick. I scored six rapid goals one after another. After the match ended, I patted that player's back again and said, "Friend, so much anger in a game is not good. I have already taken my revenge. If you hadn't hit me with the hockey stick, perhaps I would have beaten you by just two goals." That player was truly very embarrassed. So, did you see my way of taking revenge? Believe me, a person who does bad things always remains afraid that he too will be treated badly.
About the Chapter
Reading the name of this chapter, some names or pictures of round objects must have come to your mind - a round ball, round bread, round moon, and so on. But this chapter is about a special kind of goal and the person who scores it. This chapter is an excerpt from the memoirs of a famous player. Come, let us read it and find out who that famous player was!
Today, wherever I go, children and elders surround me and want to know the secret of my success. I don't have any secret formula for success. I tell everyone the same thing - dedication, hard work and good sportsmanship are the greatest secrets of success. I was born in the year 1905 in Prayag in an ordinary family. Later, we moved to Jhansi. At the age of 16, I joined the 'First Brahmin Regiment' as an ordinary soldier. My regiment had quite a reputation in hockey. But I had no interest in sports then. At that time, our regiment's subedar major was Tiwari. He would repeatedly ask me to play hockey. There was no fixed time to play hockey in our cantonment. Soldiers would reach the field whenever they wanted and start practice. At that time, I was a novice player.
Teacher's Note
Notice how the narrator's interest in hockey grew gradually, and with practice came improvement and recognition. This shows that dedication and consistent effort are what build skill, not just natural talent. In your own studies and activities, ask yourself: am I putting in regular effort, or am I waiting for things to come easily?
As my skill in the game improved, so did I get appreciation. In 1936, I was made captain for the Berlin Olympics. At that time, I was a lance naik in the army. People were so impressed with my way of playing hockey at the Berlin Olympics that they started calling me the 'Wizard of Hockey'. This does not mean that I scored all the goals. My constant effort was always that I would take the ball close to the goal and give it to one of my fellow players so that he could have the chance to score. Because of this sportsmanship of mine, I won the hearts of sports lovers all over the world. We won the gold medal at the Berlin Olympics. While playing, I always took care to remember that victory or defeat was not mine, but my country's.

I always believed in giving credit to my teammate so that he too could score a goal. I have no magic formula for success. I always say that dedication, hard work and good sportsmanship are the greatest secrets of success. While playing, I always kept in mind that victory or defeat was not mine, but my country's.
Teacher's Note
Major Dhyan Chand's idea of sportsmanship is clear: it is not just about winning for yourself, but about playing fairly and helping your team. When you face competition - in school, sports, or exams - remember that how you play matters as much as whether you win. Good character builds lasting respect.
