Addition: Revision

Study the following example.

For the first day of a cricket match, 23,456 tickets were sold while 14,978 tickets were sold for the second day. How many tickets were sold in all?

The total number of tickets sold was 38,434.

Addition is used in everyday life. For example, when you add money from your pocket money and your parents' gift, you use addition.

Exam Trick

Always align numbers by their place values (ones, tens, hundreds). Start adding from the right side. This helps you avoid mistakes.

Points to Remember

Write numbers one below the other with ones place aligned.
Start adding from the ones place on the right.
When a sum is 10 or more, carry the tens digit to the next column.
Check your answer by adding again.

Addition Of Six-Digit And Seven-Digit Numbers

Last year, you have learnt to add five-digit numbers. Six- and seven-digit numbers can be added using the same method.

Study the following examples.

Add:

Example (1) 1,43,057 + 4,21,689

Example (2) 26,42,073 + 7,39,478

Example (3) 3,12,469 + 758 + 24,092

Example (4) 64 + 409 + 5,13,728

In the examples 3 and 4, the numbers are carried over mentally.

Teacher's Note

Six-digit numbers are used to count things like city populations or large amounts of money in India. For example, a car costs around 5,00,000 rupees.

Exam Trick

Remember the place values in order: U, T, H, Th, TTh, L, TL. Line them up correctly before adding, and the answer will be correct.

Points to Remember

Six-digit numbers have places: Ones, Tens, Hundreds, Thousands, Ten-thousands, Lakhs.
Write all numbers in their correct place columns.
Carry over to the next column when needed.
Seven-digit numbers add in the same way as five-digit numbers.

Subtraction: Revision

Study the following example.

Last year, 38,796 students took a certain exam. This year the number was 47,528. How many more students took the exam this year?

8,732 more students took the exam this year.

Teacher's Note

Subtraction is used when we find the difference between two amounts. For example, if you have 100 rupees and spend 65 rupees, subtraction tells you how much money is left.

Exam Trick

Remember: In subtraction, always put the bigger number on top. Start subtracting from the ones place on the right, just like addition.

Points to Remember

Write the larger number on top and smaller number below it.
Align numbers by their place values.
Start subtracting from the ones place on the right.
If you cannot subtract, borrow from the next column.
