Clothes - Our Necessity
Can You Tell?
Observe the pictures given below carefully. Choose the clothes you would like to have and circle them.
Teacher's Note
Clothes protect our body from heat, cold, and rain. In India, we wear different clothes in summer and winter because of our different weather.
Exam Trick
Remember: Clothes are a NEED, not just a want. We need them to stay safe and healthy. When you see ads for new clothes, ask yourself - do I need it or do I just want it?
Points to Remember
Clothes protect our body from weather and keep us safe.
Different clothes are needed for different seasons.
We wear different clothes for different occasions.
Needing clothes is different from wanting many clothes.
Greed is when we want too many things we don't need.
Can You Tell?
In the box, write the total number of clothes you selected.
Does the number of clothes you have chosen tally with that of your friends?
On which days will you wear the clothes you have chosen?
How many times in a day will you change your clothes?
Do you think you should have other clothes besides the ones you have chosen? If so, write how many in the box.
Apart from the clothes, which other things would you like to wear?
Will you lend your clothes to your friends?
Which clothes that you see in the advertisements would you like to wear?
We like to wear many different types of clothes and we wish to own them as well.
Teacher's Note
When children see advertisements on TV and hoardings, they want to buy many clothes. But we only need a few clothes. Teaching children about need versus want is important.
Exam Trick
Remember: Need = must have. Want = nice to have. Before buying clothes, ask - do I really need this or do I just want it because I saw it in an ad?
Points to Remember
Wanting clothes is not the same as needing them.
Seeing ads can make us want to buy things we don't need.
Greed means wanting too many things.
We should only buy clothes we actually need.
Our friends may choose different clothes than us.
Can You Tell?
Repeat the first 'Can you tell?' activity and make new notes in your book. While doing this, keep in mind your need and write the number of clothes you choose, in the box.
Are your answers in the second activity the same as in the first?
After this activity, we may find that the number of clothes we wish to have is rather large. Wanting clothes and really needing them are different things. Wanting things when we do not need them is simply desire, not necessity.
We see many advertisements on TV, hoardings, etc. and we are attracted towards the clothes shown in them. This attraction can turn into greed.
Use Your Brain Power!
Rohan and Sania have many clothes, but they do not wear many of them. Now they are wondering what they should do with all these clothes. Help them to solve their problem.
Discuss: Need and Greed for Clothes
Teacher's Note
Some families have too many clothes in their cupboards but wear only a few. We can give extra clothes to poor children or to charities. This teaches children about sharing and helping others.
Exam Trick
Remember: If you don't wear a shirt for one year, you probably don't need it. Keep only clothes you wear. Give the rest to someone who needs them.
Points to Remember
Having many clothes does not mean you need all of them.
Extra clothes can be given to people who need them.
Donating clothes helps poor families and the environment.
We should keep only clothes we actually wear.
Sharing is better than keeping extra things unused.
Try This
Visit people in your surroundings who often take shelter at places like railway or bus stations, brick kilns, open grounds, etc. Discuss the following points with them and make notes.
What is the total number of clothes they have?
What do they wear in the summer?
What kind of clothes do they wear in winter?
What clothes do they use during the monsoon season?
What do they wear to functions and festivities?
How many times in a day do they change their clothes?
What did you realise from the activity above?
