On The Time-Line

Use the phrases on the time-line in the given sentences to make meaningful sentences.

Understanding Past Time

The time-line shows different times in the past. From the dinosaur time to now, we can see how time moves.

Millions of years ago - dinosaurs lived on the earth.

Long long ago - there used a king.

Many years ago - time was far away.

A few years ago - time was near now.

Last year - time was very near now.

Many days ago - time was close to now.

Last week - time was very close to now.

Day before yesterday - yesterday was after this day.

Yesterday - this was one day before today.

A little while ago or some time ago - this was a short time before now.

Now or just now - this is the present time.

Today - this is the present day.

Tonight - this is the night of today.

Teacher's Note

Time-lines help us understand when things happened. Like when your teacher says "I gave you homework last week," it means 7 days ago, just like on the time-line.

Exam Trick

Remember: The time-line moves from left to right, just like how time moves from the past to now to the future. The closer to "now," the nearer the time is.

Points to Remember

Past time phrases show things that already happened.
Present time phrases show things happening now.
Future time phrases show things that will happen.
The time-line helps us see all times together.
"Millions of years ago" is very far in the past.

Understanding Future Time

The time-line also shows times in the future. These are times that will come.

Now or just now - this is today.

This week - these are the days of this week.

This month - these are all the days in this month.

Tomorrow - this is the day after today.

After a while or later - this is a short time after now.

Day after tomorrow - this is two days after today.

Next week - this will come in seven days.

After many days - this will come many days from now.

Next year - this will come in twelve months.

After a few years - this will come in some years.

Many years from now - this will come long time after.

Thousands of years from now - this will come very far in the future.

Example Sentences

I was in Std 1.

There were dinosaurs on the earth.

There lived a king.

I gave you a book.

We visited the zoo.

I am busy.

I want something to read.

She needs water.

I am drawing a picture.

School starts.

I will give it back to you.

He is going to play cricket.

People will land on Mars.

We will be in college.

They will go home.

We will grow old.

Teacher's Note

Future time is important in English. When we say "I will play tomorrow," it means the game will happen after today, just like on this time-line showing future time.

Exam Trick

Remember: Future sentences use "will" or "is going to." Past sentences use "was," "were," or simple past. Look at the time phrase to know which tense to use.

Points to Remember

Future phrases show times that will come later.
"Tomorrow" means the day after today.
"Next week" means seven days from now.
"Will" is used for future time sentences.
The further right on the line, the further in the future.
