Teacher's Note
In India, we use directions to find places like the local market or the nearest temple. North, South, East, and West help us understand maps better.
Exam Trick
Remember: North is always UP on a map. South is DOWN. East is RIGHT. West is LEFT. Use your hands to remember: your right hand points East.
Points to Remember
There are four main directions: North, South, East, and West.
North points upward on a map.
South points downward on a map.
East is to the right.
West is to the left.
Can You Tell?
The pictures of the mountain, well, street lamp and fort are not towards the main directions. Find out between which two main directions they are located and write your answer in the table below.
| Picture | Main Directions |
|---|---|
| Mountain | North and West |
| Well | |
| Street Lamp | |
| Fort |
Many things lie between two main directions. To determine the direction in which they lie, we use sub-directions.
Teacher's Note
Sub-directions are like North-East or South-West. When you stand in your classroom and look at things, some may be in front-left (North-West) or front-right (North-East) from where you are.
Exam Trick
Remember: Every sub-direction name has either "North" or "South" in it. For example: North-East, North-West, South-East, South-West. This helps you remember all eight directions easily.
Points to Remember
There are eight directions in total: North, South, East, West, North-East, North-West, South-East, and South-West.
Sub-directions are between two main directions.
A compass rose shows all eight directions.
Maps always use a compass rose for directions.
Directions are always parallel to the ground.
Can You Tell?
Study the following circle of directions and sub-directions carefully. Note the sub-directions that lie between every two adjacent main directions. You will find that the name of every sub-direction begins either with North or South. Now, look at the objects given at the beginning of the lesson once again. Check your answers and correct them if necessary.
Draw the diagram showing the directions and sub-directions on a small card. It is known as the compass rose. We will use this compass rose later in the lesson.
Do You Know?
Directions are always parallel to the ground. That is why a map must always be aligned to the local directions. This makes it easier for us to understand the map and the region.
Use Your Brain Power!
Use the compass rose made earlier to read the map given above. Place the rose on Beed and make a list of all the districts that are situated along the main directions and sub-directions. Repeat this activity for other districts.
Place the rose at the centre of our State and note the location of your district in the State.
Teacher's Note
In Maharashtra, districts like Pune and Nagpur are in different directions from Mumbai. Using a compass rose helps us understand where each city is located.
Exam Trick
Remember: Place the compass rose on the map with North pointing upward. Then you can easily find which districts are North, South, East, or West of any place.
Points to Remember
