Officers In Armed Forces (Entries After X + II)

(Please refer to the UPSC and Armed Services websites and Employment News for schedules and latest parameters.)

4. Armed Forces Medical College entry for Nursing Stream

Teacher's Note

NDA is a famous academy in Pune. Many Indian students join the armed forces to protect our country. You can become an officer after studying hard.

Exam Trick

Remember: NDA entries are after Class 12 (X + II). AFMC entries are also after Class 12. SSB interview is needed for all entries except AFMC and Nursing.

Points To Remember

NDA is located in Pune.

You need Class 12 pass for officer entries.

AFMC is for medical stream students.

Nursing entry is also available for medical students.

Officers In Armed Forces (Entries After Graduation)

(Can be attempted while in the final year of graduation)

1. Through Combined Defence Services entrance examination. (Permanent Commission stream or Short Service Commission stream.)

2. Entry for Engineers in all three Services

3. Legal cadre and Education Cadre

Note: All entries (except AFMC and Nursing) have SSB interview procedure.

Teacher's Note

After graduation, you can join the army as an officer. Many engineering students from India join as engineers in the army, navy, and air force.

Exam Trick

Remember: Combined Defence Services exam is for graduates. There are different streams - Permanent Commission and Short Service Commission.

Points To Remember

You can apply while doing final year of graduation.

Combined Defence Services is for all three forces.

Engineers can join in all three services.

Lawyers and teachers can also join the armed forces.

Entries In Non-Officer Cadre

These are announced by the Directorate of Recruitment for entry as Jawans, Airmen and Naviks. Minimum qualifications are X + II. Some craftsmen are also recruited after X std. There are also technical entries for diploma holders as direct recruitment at Non-Commissioned Officer levels (Naiks and Havildars or equivalent ranks in the Navy and the Air Force).

Teacher's Note

Non-officer cadre means soldiers and workers in the army. You can join as a Jawan after Class 10 or Class 12. This is like how police constables are recruited in your city.

Exam Trick

Remember: Non-officer cadre = Jawans, Airmen, and Naviks. They have lower qualification needs than officers. Diploma holders can join as Naiks or Havildars.

Points To Remember

Jawans are soldiers in the army.

Airmen work in the air force.

Naviks work in the navy.

Minimum qualification is Class 12 for most positions.

Some craftsmen can join after Class 10.

Gallantry Awards For Armed Forces

Those for gallantry other than in the face of the enemy.

Ashoka Chakra (AC)

Awarded for most conspicuous bravery, or some act of daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice otherwise than in the face of the enemy.

Kirti Chakra (KC)

Awarded for conspicuous gallantry otherwise than in the face of the enemy.

Shaurya Chakra (SC)

Awarded for gallantry otherwise than in the face of the enemy.

Teacher's Note

Ashoka Chakra is the highest bravery award. These medals are given to soldiers who are very brave. Just like we give medals to sports winners in school, the government gives medals to brave soldiers.

Exam Trick

Remember: Ashoka Chakra is the highest. Kirti Chakra is middle level. Shaurya Chakra is the third level. All three are for bravery without fighting the enemy directly.

These awards are for acts of bravery.

For distinguished service of an exceptional order.

Vishisht Seva Medal

For distinguished service of a high order.

For distinguished service of a high order during war/conflict/hostilities.

Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal

For distinguished service of the most exceptional order during War/conflict/hostilities.

Uttam Yudh Seva Medal

For distinguished service of an exceptional order during war/conflict/hostilities.

Yuddh Seva Medal

For distinguished service of a high order during war/conflict/hostilities.

These medals are given for good service work. Soldiers get these medals for doing excellent work. It is like getting a certificate for good work at school.

Exam Trick

Remember: Param = highest, Ati = second, Vishisht = third. When it says "Yudh" it means during war. All other medals are for peacetime service.

Yudh medals are given during war or fighting.
