(अ) हिन्दी शब्दों के प्रकार :
हिन्दी के अधिकांश मुख्य शब्द या तो संस्कृत से सीधे आए हैं अथवा संस्कृत से पालि, प्राकृत, अपभ्रंश से विकसित हुए हैं। हिन्दी भाषा की विकास यात्रा में इसने अपनी समकालीन भारतीय तथा विदेशी भाषाओं के कुछ शब्दों को भी अपनाया है। ऐसे कुछ शब्द तो इतने घुल-मिल गए हैं कि वे विदेशी लगते ही नहीं। इनके अलावा, हिन्दी भाषा में क्षेत्रीय बोलियों या जनभाषाओं के बहुत से शब्द प्रचलित हैं। आवश्यकता के अनुसार हम नए शब्द भी गढ़ रहे हैं। इस प्रकार, हिन्दी की शब्द संपदा को इतिहास या स्रोत के आधार पर निम्नलिखित पाँच प्रकारों में बाँटा जा सकता है:
- 1. तत्सम शब्द
- 2. तद्भव शब्द
- 3. देशज शब्द
- 4. विदेशी (आगत) शब्द तथा
- 5. संकर शब्द।
1. स्त्रोत (उद्भव) की दृष्टि से शब्द के प्रकार :
तत्सम शब्द: संस्कृत के जो शब्द हिन्दी में वैसे ही इस्तेमाल किए जाते हैं, उन्हें तत्सम शब्द कहते हैं।
कुछ तत्सम शब्द – अभिमान, अतिरिक्त, निर्देश, निर्मम, रात्रि, अश्व।
तद्भव शब्द: तद्भव शब्द का अर्थ है जैसा हो गया है। संस्कृत के जिन शब्दों का रूप हिन्दी में आकर कुछ न कुछ बदल गया है, उन्हें तद्भव शब्द कहा जाता है।

तत्सम शब्द :
अखंड, निस्संकोच, विद्रोह, कुख्यात, अहिंसा, प्रदूषण, अभिषेक, उत्कंठा, अवगुण, सक्रिय, अलंकृत, विकल्प, अधःपतन, कुप्रथा, सुपात्र, अंतर्धान, अभिनय, परामर्श, बहिष्कृत, विक्रय।
तद्भव शब्द :
चोंच, दुपहिया, दूध, मोर, अनपढ़, अधजला, अनाज, निकम्मा, कपूत, चौपाई, अधपका, बिनमाँगा।
देशज शब्द: जो शब्द न तो तत्सम हैं, न तद्भव हैं और न ही किसी विदेशी भाषा से लिए गए हैं, उन्हें 'देशज' शब्द कहा जाता है। उनकी उत्पत्ति ठीक से पता नहीं है।
जैसे -
भड़भड़ाना, चमचमाना, जगमगाना, झाडू, पेड़, झाड़, लोटा, टॉग, ठेठ, खटखटाना, ठसक, फुफकार।
विदेशी शब्द (आगत शब्द): जो शब्द भारत के बाहर के देशों की भाषाओं मुख्यतः अरबी, फारसी तथा अंग्रेजी से आए हैं उन्हें (विदेशी) आगत शब्द कहा जाता है।
