तत्सम शब्द: संस्कृत के जो शब्द हिन्दी में वैसे ही इस्तेमाल किए जाते हैं, उन्हें तत्सम शब्द कहते हैं।
कुछ तत्सम शब्द – अभिमान, अतिरिक्त, निर्देश, निर्मम, रात्रि, अश्व।
तद्भव शब्द: तद्भव शब्द का अर्थ है जैसा हो गया है। संस्कृत के जिन शब्दों का रूप हिन्दी में आकर कुछ न कुछ बदल गया है, उन्हें तद्भव शब्द कहा जाता है।

तद्भव शब्द :
चोंच, दुपहिया, दूध, मोर, अनपढ़, अधजला, अनाज, निकम्मा, कपूत, चौपाई, अधपका, बिनमाँगा।
देशज शब्द: जो शब्द न तो तत्सम हैं, न तद्भव हैं और न ही किसी विदेशी भाषा से लिए गए हैं, उन्हें 'देशज' शब्द कहा जाता है। उनकी उत्पत्ति ठीक से पता नहीं है।
