Guesstimates

Example 1 48% of Rs 10829 would be

Rs 597.92 | Rs 5197.92 | Rs 5197.29

Now 50% of Rs 10000 = Rs 5000, so the answer is either Rs 5197.92 or Rs 5197.29. As the product of the units places = 8 × 9 = 72, the answer must be Rs.5197.92

Example 2 After 5 years, Rs 4,13,000 @ 9.5% p.a would amount to

Rs 216825 | Rs 906175 | Rs 609175

The answer cannot be Rs 216825 as it is less than the principal. 10% of Rs 4 lakhs = Rs 40000, and 40000 × 5 = 2 lakhs so the answer has to be close to 4 + 2 = 6 lakhs or the answer must be Rs 609175
