Habitat
The place where an organism naturally lives and grows is its habitat. It gives food, shelter, air and water. There are two main kinds: terrestrial (on land) and aquatic (in water).
| Habitat | Features | Animals |
|---|---|---|
| Forest | Many plants and trees; animals live in caves, on trees, in burrows and on the forest floor | Tiger, lion, monkey, snake, rabbit, deer, elephant |
| Desert | Dry, sandy, very little rain; hot by day, cold at night | Camel, kangaroo, rat, rattlesnake |
| Polar regions and mountains | Snow covered and cold all year | Penguin, polar bear, seal, walrus |
| Ocean | Largest habitat; salt water | Fish, crab, starfish, shark, whale, octopus |
| Fresh water | Ponds, lakes, streams, rivers | Fish, frog, snake, duck, swan, crane |
The camel has thick broad feet to walk on sand, thick eyelids against blowing sand, and stores fat in its hump. Polar bears have thick fur and penguins have a layer of fat called blubber.
Adaptation
The features and habits that help an organism survive in its habitat are called adaptation.
| Body covering | Animals | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Scales | Reptiles, fish | Prevent water loss; fish scales are waterproof |
| Shell | Tortoise, snail | Hard protection |
| Fur or wool | Polar bear, yak, sheep | Protects from cold |
| Feathers | Birds (flight, body and down feathers) | Flying, covering and warmth |
| Spines | Porcupine, echidna | Protection from enemies |
| Hard covering of chitin | Grasshopper, cockroach | Protection |
Breathing Organs
| Organ | Animals |
|---|---|
| Moist skin | Earthworm; frog in water |
| Body surface | Amoeba, paramecium |
| Gills | Fish, crabs, prawns |
| Spiracles (air holes) | Insects such as flies, mosquitoes, butterflies |
| Lungs | Birds, reptiles, mammals (including whales and dolphins); frog on land |
Movement
| Animals | How they move |
|---|---|
| Land animals | Walk, run, hop or leap on legs; worms and bugs crawl; snails glide on a single foot |
| Aquatic animals | Fish use fins and tail; dolphins, seals and penguins use flippers; frogs and ducks use webbed feet; octopus and squid use jet propulsion |
| Insects | Six legs; most have wings; grasshoppers hop |
| Birds | Fly using wings and strong flight muscles; bat is the only flying mammal |
| Reptiles | Lizards and crocodiles crawl; snakes slither |
Migration
The movement of animals in large groups from one place to another in search of food, warmth or a place to breed is migration. Siberian cranes come to India in winter. The Arctic tern flies about 35,000 km a year between the Arctic and Antarctic. Whales, monarch butterflies and salmon also migrate.
