The debate to reduce the syllabus of all classes has heated up post comments by Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. He suggested that all state boards including CBSE and NCERT should reduce syllabus for all classes so that quality education instead of quantity education can be given to students.
These are very valid comments after long by a minister as the students these days are burdened by the syllabus which runs into 100s of chapters in every class. To complete the syllabus the teachers focus more on completion of syllabus as per the defined number of period allocated to various chapters instead of concentrating on the fact that the concepts should be made clear to students which will help them in longer run.
The students are also stuck in a web of completing the syllabus and giving weekly tests followed by multiple term examinations every year. Each student ends up giving almost 50 tests including exams in every class for various subjects. To add to this burden they have to work on many projects, debates and also take part in competitions.
All this has reduced focus on quality education which can help the student to develop areas of interests which can lead to specializations in future years.
Though this debate has been started at Delhi, its not an easy task to convince CBSE to reduce syllabus and bring change in the education system of such a big country impacting millions of students. Also students are still struggling to adjust with the changes brought by CCE system and the return of class 10 and class 12 board examinations.
