Story at a Glance

In this story Prem Chand describes the experiences of two families. One day the husband of the narrator of the story served ‘sherbat’ and ‘pun’ to the freedom fighters. So he was sentenced for one year’s rigorous imprisonment. The narrator was not perturbed. She felt proud of her husband and wanted to touch his feet. She celebrated her husband’s going to jail by distributing sweets among the freedom fighters.

She was quite alone in her house. So she informed her father and father-in-law and requested them to help. But both refused. Her father-in-law was afraid lest his pension be stopped and her father was afraid lest his promotion and increment be stopped. Two policemen in white clothes watched her house every time. She was very much afraid yet she determined to preserve her femininity at all costs. Babu Gyan Chand, a school

teacher, was the best friend of her husband. When he came to know about it, he came to her with his wife. They requested her to live with them. She agreed. There also she saw two policemen watching the house of Babu Gyan Chand. The narrator did not like that her hosts should be in trouble. But Gyan Chand’s wife was not troubled at all.

One evening when Gyan Babu returned from his college, he was very much perturbed. His principal had asked him to turn the lady out of his house. She was the wife of a freedom fighter. It was the order of the Commissioner. But Gyan babu did not yield before them. He resigned from his post. His resignation opened the eyes of the principal. He and the Commissioner both asked him many questions and were satisfied that Gyan Babu had no connection with the movement of freedom.

Answer: The principal had asked Gyan Babu to turn the lady out of her house. But Gyan Babu’s wife did not like to turn her out of the house at any cost.

Answer: In my opinion the sacrifice of Gyan Babu is greater. He was not a political man. Yet he was ready to sacrifice his service; i.e. means of livelihood of his family, for the sake of his friendship. Risking one's entire family's survival for a friend requires immense courage.

Question 23. How does the narrator regard Gyan Babu’s wife? Do you think she is justified in her feelings?

Answer: The narrator regarded Gyan Babu’s wife as a goddess. She is justified in her feelings. Mrs. Gyan Babu helped her while her own father and father-in-law refused to help her. Her selfless actions stood out as a beacon of hope during a very dark time. She was so broad-minded and self-sacrificing that she herself asked Gyan Babu to resign if his principal was adamant to get the narrator turned out of his house.
In simple words: The narrator respects Gyan Babu's wife like a goddess. This is completely fair because Gyan Babu's wife supported her when even her own family refused to help, and she was ready to let her husband lose his job for her sake.

🎯 Exam Tip: Mention the contrast between the family's refusal to help and Mrs. Gyan Babu's selfless support to justify the narrator's high regard.

Question 24. Gyan Babu’s wife says, “There’s only one answer, isn’t there?” Write in your own words what this answer is ?

Answer: The answer is that Gyan Babu should tell his principal that he is not going to let that lady go from his house and if he does not like that idea, he can have his resignation. This bold stance showed her immense courage and moral strength in standing up for what was right.
In simple words: Gyan Babu's wife wanted him to stand firm and refuse to throw the helpless lady out of their house. If the school principal did not like this decision, Gyan Babu should simply resign from his job.

🎯 Exam Tip: Clearly explain the moral choice made by Gyan Babu's wife to show her character's strength. Mentioning the option of resignation is crucial for scoring full marks.

Question 25. “If there ever was a goddess, she is one.” Who said this & why in the story ‘A Special Experience’? [2009]

Answer: The lady whose husband was jailed said these words about Gyan Babu’s wife. She gave the lady such affection and such respect whereas she was spurned by her father and father-in-law. This unexpected kindness deeply touched her heart during her darkest times.
In simple words: The jailed man's wife called Gyan Babu's wife a goddess because she showed her great love and respect at a time when her own family had rejected and abandoned her.
