Abbreviations I

Use the abbreviations Mr., Mrs., Ms., and Dr. before a person’s name.

Abbreviate Junior (Jr.) and Senior (Sr.) after a person’s name. Abbreviate professional or academic degrees that follow a person’s name.

Use the abbreviations A.M. (ante meridiem, “before noon”) and P.M. (post
meridiem, “after noon”) for exact times. For dates use B.C. (before Christ) and,
sometimes, A.D. (anno Domini, “in the year of the Lord,” after Christ.)

Abbreviate calendar items (days of the week, months of the year) only when they
appear in charts and lists.

In charts, graphs, and tables abbreviate units of measure.
