Chapter-wise Worksheet for Class 5 English Articles
Students of Class 5 should use this English practice paper to check their understanding of Articles as it includes essential problems and detailed solutions. Regular self-testing with these will help you achieve higher marks in your school tests and final examinations.
Class 5 English Articles Worksheet with Answers
There are two kinds of Articles.
1. Indefinite Articles- ‘A’ and ‘An’ are Indefinite Articles. They do not refer to any particular thing.
Ex-1. There is an egg on the table.
2. I am writing a letter.
2. Definite Articles- ‘The’ is a Definite Article. It points out to a particular person or thing.
Ex- This is the book that I bought yesterday.
Use of ‘a’ and ‘An’-
1. We use A and An with Singular Countable Nouns. A is used before Singular Nouns starting with a consonantl sound. An is used before Singular Nouns starting with a vowel sound. Ex- a bag, an inkpot etc.
2. We use An before words like Hour and Honest. When we pronounce these words H remains silent and we use An with the second letter of the word that is a vowel.
3. We use A before words that begin with a vowel and gives the sound of Yoo. Ex- a university, a European, a uniform etc.
4. We say a one rupee coin not an one rupee coin as we pronounce O in one as W in won and the word won gives a consonant sound. So we use A before one.
5. We use A and An before Adjectives. Ex- A new shop has opened in our locality.
6. We use A and An for jobs and occupations. Ex- an inspector, a teacher.
*Note- We never use A and An with-
1. With Uncountable Nouns
2. Plural Nouns
3. Proper Nouns
Use of ‘The’-
1. Before a Noun which has already been introduced. Ex- This is a dog. It has four legs.
2. Before the Superlative Degree. Ex- Robert is the tallest boy of our class.
3. Before the names of river, seas and oceans. Ex- The Ganga is the holy river of hindus.
4. Before the names of mountain ranges and valleys. Ex- The Himalayas have snow-covered mountains.
5. Before such names as- moon, sun, sky and planets. Ex- The sun rises in the east.
6. Before the names of nationalities. Ex- The Indians are very brave.
7. Before the names of those nations and countries who have words like- republic, states and kingdom in their names. Ex- I visited to the United Kingdom last year.
8. Before the names of holy books. Ex- The Bible is the holy book of Christians.
9. Before the names of newspapers and magazines. Ex- We read the Times of India everyday.
10. Before the names of well-known buildings and monuments. Ex- The India Gate is in New Delhi.
11. Before the names of trains, ships and aeroplanes. Ex- The Titanic sank on 15 April1912.
12. Before a Common Noun when that Noun represents the whole class. Ex- The rose is a beautiful flower.
*Note- We never use article The in the following conditions-
1. With Abstract Nouns. Ex- Health is wealth.
2. With Material Nouns. Ex- Children drink milk everyday.
3. With Proper Nouns. Ex- Rahul is a good boy.
4.With the names of languages. Ex- French is spoken in France.
